About
Luxurious indie-pop with a generous serving of theatrics
Shrouded in mystery and with just three singles to her name, Luvcat is already headlining sold-out shows to a burgeoning cult fanbase thanks to her darkly lustful lyricism and alluring TikTok presence.
A quick internet search of ‘Luvcat’ will reveal romantic origin stories suggesting that the singer ran away with the circus on the eve of her sixteenth birthday to become a magician’s assistant, meanwhile other sources will claim that she was born in the bowels of a Parisian tugboat moored on the banks of the Seine. Although both of these stories are merely smoke and mirrors, they certainly set the tone for Luvcat’s uniquely enchanting music which catalogues doomed romances and crimes of passion.
In actual fact, Sophie Morgan was born in Liverpool and raised on a musical diet of Sinatra, the Rat Pack and musical theatre (thanks to her granddad’s record collection), and The Cure, Velvet Underground, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits (thanks to her father’s). Today, these formative influences are abundant in Luvcat’s emotive vocals, knack for storytelling and haunting melodies. Growing up, Morgan worked on a solo project under her own name, and even scored a support slot on tour with The Waterboys in 2017 after being spotted busking and covering ‘The Whole of the Moon’ by one of their members. However, it wasn’t until the tail end of 2023 when she made the move to a full band under her new moniker ‘Luvcat’ (taken from The Cure’s hit) that she began to carve a niche in the music industry.
Luvcat’s first single ‘Matador’ went viral on TikTok ahead of its official release, with viewers captivated by Morgan’s playful stage presence and dark lyricism showcased in dimly lit videos of pub venue performances. Dressed in an array of lace, tulle, and leopard print, and with fingers held to her head like horns, the videos soon accumulated millions of views as well as countless comments imploring Luvcat to publish the song on streaming platforms. Heeding these requests, ‘Matador’ was self-released in May 2024, and has since racked up over four million streams, earning the band an international following. This paved the way for an appearance at All Points East that summer, in addition to the band’s first headline shows, which sold out at the likes of Liverpool’s Kazimier Garden and London’s Paper Dress Vintage. Notably, Luvcat’s first headline show in Paris was actually on a riverboat on the Seine, where Morgan professed to bulking up their four original songs with a smattering of Leonard Cohen covers.
Luvcat’s follow-up single ‘He’s My Man’, followed in September this year and was accompanied by a surreal Tim Burton-esque music video. The waltz-inspired murder ballad proved a masterclass in Morgan’s blend of indie pop, gothic and theatrical influences, providing further material to beguile TikTok users. Released on Halloween, ‘Dinner @ Brasserie Zedel’ was met with critical acclaim for its woozy melodies and darkly decadent narrative. In conversation with Rolling Stone UK, Sophie Morgan said of the venue that inspired the track, “It’s my favourite spot in Soho and I was just going there over the years and every so often I’d think I’m going to marry the first man who takes me here on a date, so that’s why I wrote that song.”
The releases preceded an extremely sought-after support slot with The Last Dinner Party on their recent UK and EU tour.
