Red Rum Club’s origin story goes way back to when Michael McDermott and Simon Hepworth met in Year 2 of primary school. Scooping up Joe Corby in a Battle of the Bands contest when they were 14 and Neil Lawson, Francis Doran and Tom Williams in later years, the group quickly graduated from practices in McDermott’s bedroom to local gigs, playing a range of covers. They released their first single, ‘Alone Together’ with Rooftop Records in November 2016, and the following year found themselves opening the main stage of that year’s Liverpool Sound City festival.
By 2018, the band had released two further singles and had signed a new deal with Modern Sky. They also announced a major UK tour which included huge festival dates. Debut album Matador followed in January 2019, with its successful release sparking another huge tour, and an invitation from BBC Introducing to play Glastonbury. Another busy summer of festival dates followed, including shows in Sweden, Norway and Romania.
2020 saw the release of the band’s sophomore record, The Hollow Of Humdrum, a lockdown success story, with single ‘Eleanor’ getting airtime on the BBC Radio 2 playlist. The band released an acoustic version of the album entitled The Hollow Sessions in April 2021, with their third album arriving just months later. How To Steal The World was released in November, and received praise for its bold and emotive explorations of modern life.
In 2023, Red Rum Club announced the forthcoming arrival of their fourth studio album, Western Approaches, releasing singles ‘Black Cat’ and ‘Undertaker’. They also announced an 11-date UK tour, including a huge homecoming show at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena.
