About

Californian punks turned unlikely '90s chart toppers

Californian quartet The Offspring were uniquely positioned to take advantage of the grunge boom of the early to mid ’90s. Though usually labeled as a punk band, over the course of their self-titled 1989 debut and 1993’s Ignition, Dexter Holland (vocals), Noodles (guitar), Greg Wiesel (bass) and Ron Welty (who replaced founding member James Lilja on drums) displayed a metal crunch and precision that set them aside from their peers.

Their slower tempos and stop/start dynamics were used to greatest effect on their third album, 1994’s Smash, suggesting a significant overlap with slicker metal outfits and some of grunge’s harder edged bands. In particular, the singles Come Out And Play(Opens in new tab) and Self Esteem(Opens in new tab) grabbed the attention of those whose heads had been turned by Nirvana’s Nevermind. Inevitably, a bidding war ensued and the band left Epitaph Records for the big leagues, much to the chagrin of many of their punk peers.

The Offspring’s first album on Columbia was Ixnay On The Hombre. While reviews were mixed, it charted higher in the UK than its predecessor and All I Want(Opens in new tab) became the band’s highest charting single to date at No.31.

The band’s oft-ignored sense of humour came to the fore on their fifth album, the massively successful Americana. Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)(Opens in new tab) saw them skewering fickle cultural appropriation by suburban teenagers to a Latin-flavoured alternative rock sound. It proved a huge hit, reaching No.1 in ten countries, including the UK. Second single Why Don’t You Get A Job?(Opens in new tab) went close, peaking at No.2.

The Offspring continued to straddle punk, alternative rock, grunge and metal on their sixth album, Conspiracy Of One, which found them in legal strife with their own label when the band attempted to release it for free online. Welty left the band shortly after and was replaced for the sessions for their seventh album, Splinter, by Josh Freese (Vandals, Devo).

Rocket From The Crypt’s Atom Willard joined the band on drums but was replaced by Saves The Day’s Pete Parada prior to the sessions for their next album. In 2008, the band released Rise And Fall, Rage And Grace, followed by Days Go By in 2012. Greg Kriesel left the band in 2018, eventually replaced on bass by their touring guitarist Todd Morse.

In 2020, word started circulating that The Offspring were working on a new album. The band released two covers that year, of Joe Exotic’s Here Kitty Kitty and Darlene Love’s Christmas (Please Come Home).

In April 2021, the band released Let The Bad Times Roll – their first album in nine years – which reached the third spot in the UK chart and topped Billboard's alt albums chart.

In May 2023, former Black Flag drummer drummer Brandon Pertzborn swapped in for Josh Freese (who moved behind the kit for the Foo Fighters) and touring member Jonah Nimoy became an official band member. Bigger news came in 2024 with the announcement of new album Supercharged, released on 11 October shortly before news of a massive 2025 tour.

2026 saw the punk stalwarts head to London's Crystal Palace Park for a huge outdoor headline gig, with special guests Dropkick Murphys, Pennywise, PUP and Destroy Boys in support.

Wow, this band just gets better and better. Outstanding performance. Light show, visuals and even blimp floating around. Throw in a monkey along with Scooby doo and the gang and your guaranteed an awesome night.

I first saw The Offspring at Reading Festival in 1999, aged 16, and I've seen them a few times since. They always put on a fantastic show.

Everything went smoothly. Got tickets in plenty of time. Drive to the concert went smoothly. Got a spot in the local car park. Qued for 15 mins. Easily got into the concert with the tickets. Then the 2bands didn't disappoint with excellent performances. Easily got out at the end and back to the car park. Didn't take that long to get out and home well before midnight. A great night

  • Absolutely Super!

by The Little One on 16/11/2025Utilita Arena Newcastle - Newcastle Upon TyneRating: 5 out of 5

The event started well, with a great set from Simple Plan, a band I've never really taken much notice of in the past, but will do now. The interval was entertaining with the Blip going round and filming the crowd, made that time pass very quickly. Then on came The Offspring, starting with one of my favourites, Come out and play. The next 90 minutes, with a few exceptions, was just pure in your face rock. They worked it so there was no real break as such, one or two band members would go off whilst the others played. I first saw them twenty years ago, and that concert was something special, but two decades later, they've still got it (and fortunately so have I 😁) .

  • Offspring & Simple Plan

    by Stu on 15/11/2025The O2 - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent show and great support. My only wonder is how nobody has ever fallen off the balcony. Safety barrier did not seem adequate for people that might have had a little too much to drink.

  • The Offspring were incredible as always!

Well , Wow sums it up my and my partner had an amazing experience Simple plan excellent, the Offspring excellent and the entertainment inbetween was so much fun. Everyone around us was lovely and fun and very respectful, I've just had surgery on my shoulder and was given plenty of room allowing all to get the best view possible.

What a great night, all the greatest tracks, great fun like a big party, ticker tape, giant beach balls, a blimp, just fun 'other stuff' making it that little bit extra special in addition to the great music! The support act also great! Loved the venue, the Utilita arena, great size, proper bar, just a really good night all round!
