About
Skepta is known to be an explosive and infectious performer. Influencing worldwide dance crazes, mimicked by global celebrities and homegrown talent alike, Skepta has become a worldwide music star. His energetic beefs with friend and collaborator Wiley set the Grime community alight in 2009 and stoked an already rampaging fire that seems to blaze indefinitely.
Bursting onto the London underground scene in the early 2000s as DJ Off Key, and with a stint at pirate radio station Heat FM, Skepta didn't mess about. After discovering his talents as a producer, buoyed by the success of underground hit DTI in 2003, and with a creative scratch to itch, he soon formed Boy Better Known in 2005. Alongside his brother Jamie Adenuga, (JME) this fiery collective became one of the better-known crews in the Grime scene. This firmly established Skepta and his crew as a force to be reckoned with, a position further bolstered by his debut album in 2007, entitled Greatest Hits.
2008 was the unofficial Year of the Rolex, as MC friends Wiley and Skepta got the UK dance floors buzzing. With fun beats, chatty lyrics and a Grime-inspired Macarena to boot, Wearing My Rolex (Wiley - Produced by Bless Beats) smashed into the charts at no.2. With Busta Rhymes and other personalities imitating his Rolex Sweep, Skepta had created a global phenomenon. His latest album Microphone Champion (2009) and the single Bad Boy (2010) seems to have opened large doors for Skepta, with recent requests for remixes by none other the self-styled inventor of the remix, P. Diddy.
Hailing from Tottenham, North London and born Joseph Junior Adenuga, Skepta was influenced in his teenage years by hip-hop from the US. Initially listening to artists such as Notorious B.I.G., Tupac and Snoop Dogg, Skepta's music tastes evolved over the years as he soon came full circle to become a firm fan of U.K. Grime crew, Heartless. The influences of these rap icons from his formative years can be clearly heard in all his music, and sparked an inspiration that catalysed the transformation of a young North London pirate DJ into an international superstar, his impact traversing the globe.
