About

The beloved jazz vocalist

Gregory Porter may be instantly recognisable from his trademark deerstalker cap, but his sonorous, Grammy-winning voice speaks for itself. Born in California in 1971, Porter grew up in a musical household and began singing in church, where his mother was a pastor and his father a singer.

After an injury hindered his hopes to pursue American Football, Porter turned to his vocal talents and moved to New York City in 2004 to build a career. After performing local shows and earning himself a residency, in 2010 he released his debut Water. Porter's popularity rocketed from the underground jazz scene to the mainstream in 2013, when his third full-length Liquid Spirit – his first on Blue Note Records – won Best Jazz Vocal Album at the Grammy's. Three years later its follow-up, Take Me to the Alley, won the same award. In 2017 he released Nat "King" Cole & Me, a buttery smooth ode to one of his musical heroes.

In 2024, Porter announced an extensive UK tour for spring 2025 with Jo Harrop in support.

  • Music good, venue not so ......

by srhmbe on 23/05/2025Utilita Arena Cardiff - CardiffRating: 3 out of 5

I've seen Gregory Porter in concert several times over the years when living in London; he has a superb voice and is a joy to listen to. On this occasion we were at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff with seats in the stands - Block 7 - with a great view of the stage which was directly in front of us. However there was literally NO knee room at all and this made for a really uncomfortable evening's viewing which - at the end - even managed to detract from listening to Gregory sing. The couple to our right also struggled to sit comfortably, and all of us felt stiff and sore at the end of the concert It seems to me that the owners of the venue have arranged seating in such a way as to pack the maximum possible number of people into the arena and quite frankly I would never choose to see a concert there in future. Bearing in mind the cost of the tickets, I would expect to have a little more comfort in order to enjoy a concert. I doubt I will visit that particular venue again

  • Wonderful

Gregory porter and his band were fantastic. What an amazing sound and performance - we felt as if we were in a small venue - a very intimate sound and feeling. Only small problem was not enough leg room so a bit uncomfortable but a great view. Block 5 row B

An amazing concert from an incredible singer and his band. Loved every minute of it. The man is a legend with a voice from God.

The only down point was I arrived @ 7pm, and he didn,t come on till 8.30. You could publish all timings involved not just start and finish

  • Gregory Porter was amazing

by Ruth & Rob on 13/05/2025Co-op Live - ManchesterRating: 5 out of 5

Gregory Porter was absolutely amazing and his bands instrumentals were out of this world. We parked at the park and ride and we're directed by metro link staff where to go . There were staff available to direct or help all around the venue. Fantastic venue. Fantastic concert we'll definitely visit the Co-op live again

  • A Magical Evening

    by Steve-SaaSili on 13/05/2025Co-op Live - ManchesterRating: 5 out of 5

A simply magical evening! Great venue, easy parking (pre-booked in Blue Car Park - pricey but well worth it!) Sound quality in-venue was stunning One bizarre thing - seats aren't so big, but have armrests with cup-holders... but you can only use them for one of those things at a time! (if you've been, you'll know what I mean!) As for Gregory Porter.... We saw him in 2022 at the AO. It was an almost identical set, apart from an encore of 'Its Probably Me' which was outstanding! Though still a simply awesome event!

  • Jazzy Gregory.

    by Jimmy T on 12/05/2025SEC Armadillo - GlasgowRating: 4 out of 5

Still enjoyed the gig but like many others thought he had made it way to jazzy with too many bebop doodly bobs. Last gig in Glasgow much better.

  • Wow!
