When 112's debut album was released by Bad Boy Records in 1996, they were the acceptable face of the label, which had acquired a level of notoriety following its feud with Death Row Records.

112's sound in contrast to the hardcore hip hop released by artists like Notorious B.I.G. was gospel-tinged soul, backed by the performers' wholesome image. Debut single Only You was a crossover hit, moving from the soul charts to the mainstream and earning the band comparisons with r&b legends Boyz II Men.

Second album Room 112 was released in 1998, followed by Part III in 2001, before the group left the floundering Bad Boy label to move to Def Jam subsiduary Def Soul, where they released 2003's Hot & Wet and Pleasure & Pain in 2005.
