Samm Henshaw

Spiritual Londoner drawing on classic soul, pop and hip hop

London-native Samm Henshaw might not have grown up around musicians but he certainly grew up around music. Learning to play instruments with his church where his father was the pastor, Henshaw’s musical upbringing can be clearly heard in his repertoire, also citing Stevie Wonder, D’Angelo, Paolo Nutini and Lauryn Hill as inspirations.

In 2014, the then-20-year-old began working on his debut EP, The Sound Experiment, which was released the following year on Columbia. The record featured writing contributions from Wayne Hector, who had also worked with the likes of Nicki Minaj, One Direction and Westlife. It also caught the attention of James Bay and Chance the Rapper, both regular touchpoints for Henshaw thanks to his uplifting soulful sound and raspy vocals. Both Bay and Chance chose Henshaw to join them on tour which brought his music to a wider audience.

His songwriting style is a blend of self-expression and storytelling, proving an intimate combination that can be heard more clearly on his recent work.

Henshaw released The Sound Experiment 2 in the summer of 2016, but found wider success with a flurry of singles released from 2018 to 2019, including Broke, How Does It Feel, and Church, which featured American hip-hop artists EarthGang.

By the end of 2019, Henshaw returned with the grittier The World Is Mine and Only One to Blame. Following on from his 2018 hit Broke, Henshaw released Still Broke featuring Keyon Harrold in 2021 alongside singles Grow and Chicken Wings
