About
Championship Football In OX4
Oxford United were formed in 1893 as Headington United, with the club’s name changing in 1960 to appeal to the whole city and further increase national recognition.
The Club thrived locally and by the 1950s were one of the most respected Southern League sides. In 1962, they became a Football League club for the very first time, their Golden Age seeing them rise to the top flight in the 1980s and win the Milk Cup at a sold-out Wembley in 1986.
In recent times, United fought their way back into the Football League in 2010 following a four-year absence from the top divisions. Having gained promotion to League One in 2016, the Club spent eight years in the division battling at the top end of the league table and having gone close to promotion on several occasions.
During the 2023/24 Season, Des Buckingham led Oxford United back into the Championship following a 25-year absence, with the levels of excitement and anticipation through the roof in Oxfordshire as the only professional sports team in the county play their football in the second tier of English Football.
