Meet the new-gen junglist intent on redefining dance music
Nia Archives has quickly made a name for herself as a trailblazing figure in the contemporary jungle scene, racking up countless milestone moments since her emergence in 2020.
Born in Bradford in 1999 and raised in Leeds, Nia Archives (AKA Dehaney Nia Lishahn Hunt) has carved out a path as a veritable multi-hyphenate producer, DJ, singer, songwriter and visual artist. Set on spearheading a fresh wave of jungle and D&B, her artistry draws from inspirations as varied as Burial’s introspective production style and Maya Angelou’s poetic storytelling. The result is a collagist sound that bridges the nostalgic aspects of these classic genres whilst retaining a modern sensibility that resonates with a new generation of music lovers.
Growing up in a multicultural environment, Archives credits her family’s rich Jamaican heritage as major inspiration for her artistry. Her grandmother, Liz, was a pivotal influence, running a pirate radio station playing Goldie and Shy FX, and introducing Archives to a catalogue of successful women of colour, such as M.I.A., Jennifer Lara and Ms Dynamite. Upon leaving the family home at 16, Archives started dabbling with photography and filmmaking, before discovering jungle music through documentaries. Particularly inspired by the women pioneering the genre, such as Kemistry & Storm and DJ Flight, she began honing her craft using a bootleg version of Logic Pro and self-releasing tracks on her own label, Hijinxx Records, whilst living in Hackney Wick.
Her EPs Headz Gone West (2021) – featuring her popular 2020 release ‘Sober Feels’ – and Forbidden Feelingz (2022) attracted critical acclaim and widespread attention. Featuring on numerous ‘best of’ lists, her music also resonated with her peers who, living in lockdown, were collectively yearning for the return of heady club nights and dancing. Taken from her second EP, titular track ‘Forbidden Feelingz’ remains her most popular effort with over 43 million streams on Spotify. Nia Archives went on to release her third EP, Sunrise Bang Ur Head Against Tha Wall, via Island Records in 2023. Featuring frenetic fan favourite ‘Baianá’ and a collaboration track with Maverick Sabre entitled ‘No Need 2 Be Sorry, Call Me?’, the EP topped the UK Dance Albums Chart(Opens in new tab).
Nia Archives’ meteoric rise has also been marked by numerous accolades and an outspoken determination to put jungle on the map. After penning an open letter to the MOBO Awards, successfully asking them to introduce an Electronic/Dance category, she subsequently won in 2022. Elsewhere, Archives has scooped up a third place for the BRIT Awards’ Rising Star prize, as well as awards from NME and DJ Mag, whilst working hard to extend her reach beyond the UK with tours across North America, Europe and Australasia. In June of 2023, Nia Archives was asked to open for Beyoncé for the London leg of her Renaissance world tour.
In 2024, Nia Archives released her highly-anticipated debut album, Silence Is Loud, a genre-blending project that fused jungle with indie rock and Britpop influences (citing inspiration from The Beatles(Opens in new tab), Blur and Oasis(Opens in new tab)) whilst exploring themes of identity, loneliness and resilience. Featuring fan-favourites such as ‘Crowded Roomz’ and ‘Unfinished Business’, the album peaked at No.16 on the UK Albums Chart and earned Archives a coveted Mercury Prize nomination.
