About
Erudite troubadour formerly known as Joshua Tillman
In a previous life, Father John Misty was folk singer J.Tillman, creator of several well-received albums in the mid to late 00s. A sideline as drummer for Fleet Foxes pulled him away from his own career, before Tillman left the band and resurfaced in 2012 as crumpled, debonair crooner Father John Misty.
His debut under the new moniker – 2012’s Fear Fun – revealed a more expansive, Laurel Canyon inspired sound than Tillman’s previous, bare-boned folk songs. There was also a dark, arch sense of humour running through the material, best represented on songs like ‘Hollywood Forever Cemetry Sings’ and ‘Nancy From Now On’.
I Love You, Honeybear followed in 2015, a newly married Tillman exploring love and domesticity through Misty’s unique worldview. It was greeted by overwhelmingly positive reviews. Misty returned with the somewhat ironic Pure Comedy in 2017, Tillman’s alter ego despairing about vapid modernity and setting his Leonard Cohen-esque troubadour against a 70s progressive pop backdrop.
God’s Favourite Customer was a lighter affair and Tillman returned as Father John Misty in 2022 with another grandly debonair outing on Chloë And The Next 20th Century.
