Buddy the Elf on tour

Elf, the hit Hollywood blockbuster movie has been supersized into a live theatre spectacular for this Christmas. With a massive stage featuring amazing film backdrops on a huge led screen, plus a cast that travels through the auditorium, everyone gets a close-up view of the action. The presentation features Santa’s flying sleigh, an audience snowball fight, indoor snowstorm, a giant candy cane journey from the North Pole, aerial cirque stars and giant tv screens so you don’t miss any of the spectacle.

The story is hilariously recreated by a large cast of performers into the biggest live Christmas show in the UK. This Christmas Spectacular production features a book written by Bob Martin and Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers and Hairspray) and an original score of great songs by Matt Sklar and Chad Beguel in that has delighted audiences on Broadway and the West End.

Producer and Director Jon Conway says, “This is the sixth year we have presented this epic version of the Broadway and Hollywood hit as part of the World’s Biggest Pantomime brand. ‘Elf’ is always one of the most popular Christmas films and ‘Buddy The Elf’ a truly iconic character. We have made the show even bigger and better with new features to make it a really thrilling experience. “We are keenly aware of the economic climate and are one of the few shows to have reduced our prices from Elf’s last visit for an affordable family outing! One of the best sights is the audiences dressing up for the show, especially the dads in elf Christmas sweaters! This is an unmissable Xmas treat.

  • Wow, if only there was an award for being bad

The moment you met the pacing compare, who was like a bad kids TV presenter, you doubted the future quality of what you were about to endure. Nothing could have prepared you. The OVO is a large venue, you anticipate a spectacular show, with Santa gliding through the air, the snowball fight to be hilarious with the whole audience involved, also the advertising alludes to this level of entertainment. And it is a spectacle, but not in ways you were anticipating. There was inappropriate upskirting humor, mortification of audience members, balancing pens on a bald head, a dreadful script and a random ariel acrobat which made no sense. The snowball fight, which consisted of about 10 white footballs being dispersed amongst the entire audience. They had seemingly been robbed and were left with very limited stage props, more suited in scale to a school production than an arena. At the interval, our party of 10 all looked at each other, grabbed our coats in synchronization and ran for the exits. Don't go, and I would seriously not book future productions by this mob.

The OVO hydro is a massive venue to fill and this show didn't quite manage it perhaps in a smaller venue it would have felt magical but there wasn't enough staging/screens too small. However, the biggest problem is they have a lead actor who cannot hit a single note in the score which ruined it for me- nails down the blackboard style. I am a regular patron of broadway level musicals - this wasn't one- It had the feel of a provincial theatre touring show…. At arena tour prices - with the result of feeling ripped off. That said my kids got into the spirit and were gracious enough to say they enjoyed it. Was concerned by a skating scene late in the first act where the male skater put leather strapping around his neck and tightened to support the female swinging off him- impressive skill maybe but misjudged in an arena full of young children who may go home and copy????
