About

NZ pop rockers with a string of hits in the '80s and '90s

By the mid '80s, Kiwi institution Split Enz were beginning to wind down. During his short tenure with the band, Neil Finn (brother of Enz frontman Tim) had already staked out a reputation as a formidable songwriter with an extraordinary melodic knack. That reputation would only gather momentum with his new project: Crowded House.

Formed in Melbourne in 1985, the band was initially named The Mullanes and featured Neil Finn alongside his ex-Split Enz bandmate Paul Hester (drums), Nick Seymour (bass) and Craig Hooper (guitar). Hooper’s tenure proved short, but the remaining trio headed off to America in search of fame and fortune. They returned to their homeland with a new name and a contract with Capitol Records.

Their self-titled debut was initially viewed as a disappointment. Crowded House felt unsupported by their label, so they took matters into their own hands, building up their own hype via small acoustic shows and charming appearances on the chat show circuit. Two Top 10 singles (Don’t Dream It’s Over and Something So Strong) later and sales of the album looked much healthier.

The band returned in 1988 with their follow-up The Temple Of Low Men. Despite critical praise, the considerably darker record stalled on the outer reaches of the Top 40. By the following year, Crowded House appeared to be in ruins.

Finn consoled himself by teaming up with his brother to write and record what was supposed to become the first Finn Brothers album. Instead, the majority of the material became a new Crowded House record, with Tim now installed as a full member of the band. Woodface arrived in 1991 and provided the band with two of their biggest hits in Fall At Your Feet and Weather With You.

It was during the ensuing tour that things started to splinter, just as the group was at its highest point in the UK and Europe. Tim recognised that his role in the band’s live performances was somewhat redundant and departed the band. American Mark Hart joined on guitar and the altered line-up released Together Alone in 1993.

Shortly afterwards, Paul Hester departed the band and Neil began to devote more time to projects outside Crowded House. Eventually, in 1996, he announced that the band was no more. A final farewell show at Sydney Opera House was attended by over 100,000 people.

Neil Finn continued as a solo artist as well as finally getting around to a Finn Brothers record. In 2005, Paul Hester died by suicide after a long-standing battle with depression.

In 2007, Finn restarted Crowded House with Nick Seymour, Mark Hart and a new drummer, Matt Sherrod. The new-look quartet released two albums, 2007’s Time On Earth and 2010’s Intriguer. The band went on hiatus again while Finn spent time deputising for Lindsey Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac.

Crowded House returned with another refreshed line-up in 2019, this time consisting of Finn’s sons Liam and Ellroy, original bassist Nick Seymour and Mitchell Froom (who had produced their first three albums). Following two new singles Whatever You Want and To The Island, the band announced Dreamers Are Waiting, their first new album in ten years, released in June 2021.

A run of UK dates was initially announced for 2020, but all were rescheduled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. In early 2021, Crowded House announced their UK dates were being moved to June 2022.

In February 2024, Crowded House announced their new album Gravity Stairs – released 31 May – alongside news of a London show at O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire on 13 June.

  • Quite possibly one of the best live bands out there!

by MattM on 19/11/2024Utilita Arena Birmingham - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

This is the second time I've seen Crowded House this year, and they've consistently delivered an impressive performance. As a unit, they exude a tight bond and a palpable sense of camaraderie among the members. The chemistry between them is evident, and they effortlessly engage the audience, captivating them throughout the night. The setlist showcased a diverse range of songs, spanning their extensive discography. Their comfort plays were evident, with songs featuring intricate variations and ad-libs that led the audience on a journey before seamlessly returning to the original melody. Notably, they encouraged audience participation to the extent of choosing songs to perform and even incorporating non-original tracks into their setlist. In essence, it was an unforgettable night. If you ever get the opportunity to witness Neil Finn and his bandmates in Crowded House, seize it; you won't be disappointed. The experience will undoubtedly deepen your appreciation for the remarkable talent of the entire band, particularly the Finn family.

Crowded House do it again! Absolutely brilliant performance. All the hits and beautiful tracks from their new album with a side dose of Antipodean good fun & humor. Lovely crowd who were definitely up for a good sing along.

  • Brilliant concert, horrible seating

by Stu C on 18/10/2024Utilita Arena Birmingham - BirminghamRating: 4 out of 5

Crowded house were brilliant, sound was good, support act was less so Liam Finn unfortunately. We had seats at the side block 10 and view was very good but the seats and leg room after 30nins needed to move. Very painful to sit for any length of time.

  • Absolutely brilliant.

I have followed them since the 80s and seen them in various guises - Paul Hester, Mark Hart, etc and think this concert was one of the best I have seen . starting with Liam as support .fantastic musician but mad !!! The addition of a some more musicians ( the Greek guys) and the percussionist made the arrangements wonderful and harmonies tight. Stage presence is unique with local references and a bit of audience participation . Preferred the blue Jacket Neil.! Might have to pop down under to see them on tour there !!! Great night .

  • Crowded House awesome as always at Bournemouth BIC

by Alegna on 17/10/2024Rating: 5 out of 5

Fab show from start to end. Loved the spooky entrance with all the lanterns. Liam was a great start to the evening - quite prog rock/psychadelia and we loved it. Wished BIC had seating in the round rather than just a flat standing space - we had front row seats many moons ago at BIC for another CH show. Songs chosen were all great including Message to My Girl - really taking us back there Neil ! Musicianship from everyone was awesome as always and harmonies - a dream. Nick inadvertantly disconnected Neil's guitar cable at one point but Neil just jumped on a keyboard to play rest of the song. You are awesome - we still love seeing you after all these years and at many shows and hope you will all return very soon again to the UK.

  • Fantastic

    by Smiler on 14/10/2024The O2 - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

What a great night, Crowded House were fantastic. First number Always take the weather with you. People still coming in during the first 15 mins of their set? 4 girls in front of us chatting for most of the concert. Why not just stay in the bar? Half hour in some shouting to play Always take the weather with you. Moan over. The awesome don't dream it's over played around the 2/3 mark. So many good songs. Encore of 3 tracks. Loved the Spanish guitar too. My wife didn't realise she liked them so much til she saw them live.

  • Brilliant live band that just keep getting better and better

by Crowded House Mad! on 14/10/2024The Brighton Centre - BrightonRating: 5 out of 5

Have loved them for 35 years and seen them 3 times in the past couple of years. They are a brilliant live band and I would see them again and again and again if I could! Thank you Crowded House for being the soundtrack of my life. Love you x

  • Great show

    by Suzyblu72 on 13/10/2024OVO Hydro - GlasgowRating: 5 out of 5

Crowded House were great and we thoroughly enjoyed the show. The band played all the crowd-pleasing hits, but I personally wouldve liked a few less of those and more great songs from the bands fantastic albums instead. Liam's performance as support was a bit chaotic and sadly I'm not so keen on his style of music.

  • They were great then and they are still great.

by Mark - Melbourne / London on 13/10/2024The Brighton Centre - BrightonRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome concert. Venue was basic but the intimate setting was great for crowd and the band. You got the feeling with their engaging conversation between their classics they were thoroughly enjoying the performance - the crowd certainly were. Simply go see them on their current tour - you will enjoy every 130mins of their performance And Liam Finn - lets try and get that new song you created last night - Brighton - to number 1 or 2 in the charts.... Thanks guys / your energy was infectious and the songs / lyrics even more poignant today after becoming a little wiser like you guys...
