  • Have you seen the audience, Van?

by Rhea on 01/04/2025Usher Hall - EdinburghRating: 4 out of 5

To start with the good: the sound quality in Usher Hall is exceptional! Van Morrison's concert was characterized by its high quality and the great musicians. However, the atmosphere was very subdued, as Van Morrison didn't seem to be paying any attention to the audience. It seemed to me as if it were a studio recording, and very often his back was turned to the audience. Such a shame! He came on stage without saying anything to the audience (a "thank you" once in a while) and left without even saying goodbye... That's extremely strange. I found it particularly irritating that there was no encore at all. The band members then played their solos, which were all very good. But Van Morrison was nowhere to be seen. I really missed the lack of audience interaction. What is pleasing, however, is that at his age of almost 80, I think his voice still holds up well. However, I won't be going to one of his concerts again.

  • Self indulgent, disrespectful, disappointing

by Leann on 31/03/2025Rating: 1 out of 5

"I'm so incredibly disappointed after Van Morrison's concert at the Usher Hall. My friend and I had been looking forward to it for ages. 'Into the Mystic' was one of her late husband's favourite songs, so it was supposed to be a really special night for her. But it just wasn't what we expected. He spent most of the night with his back to the audience, and it felt really distant. The music seemed very self-indulgent, and he didn't play many of his well-known songs. 'Brown Eyed Girl' and 'Into the Mystic' were missing, and 'Have I Told You Lately That I Love You' was changed so much, it was almost unrecognisable. Then, halfway through 'Gloria', he just walked off the stage! We waited patiently, hoping he'd return, but the band played a long solo and then they left too. There was no hello. goodbye, no thank you, nothing. We were told he leaves early to catch his taxi, which felt very disrespectful to everyone who had paid to see him. His voice was still good, and the band were excellent, but the whole experience left us feeling really mad. It felt like he didn't appreciate the audience at all. We were just so sad that it wasn't the special night we were hoping for. It felt like a very self-indulgent performance."

  • Man of few words

by NORIE on 31/03/2025Glasgow Royal Concert Hall - GlasgowRating: 4 out of 5

Man of very few words but boy can he sing. He still has a strong voice for his age. His band and backing singers are terrific, it's only a shame he's only on stage for 1 hour 30 mins.
