About

Pioneers in the UK's new wave movement

The Human League were formed in 1977 by synth duo Martyn Ware and Ian Marsh. Following a short stint as The Future, and joined by Philip Oakley and Adrian Wright, The Human League released their debut Being Boiled single in 1978. After a tour alongside Siouxsie & The Banshees and an instrumental EP, the band unveiled their full-length debut Reproduction and follow-up Travelogue before both founding members Ware and Marsh departed the band citing creative differences.

With Wright and Oakley remaining, they enlisted bassist Ian Burden alongside vocalists Susan Ann Sully and Joanne Catherall. Although Burden would go on to depart the band in 1987, that period would see The Human League release Dare, their defining 1981 record that spawned the new wave staple Don't You Want Me, alongside fellow UK top ten singles Love Action (I Believe In Love) and Open Your Heart.

Hitting No.1 on the UK album chart and going triple Platinum, Dare led the way for The Human League's synth domination of the '80s. The band went on to release Hysteria in 1984 and Crash in 1986. Both their sound and aesthetic heavily influenced the electronic scene, acting as catalysts for the growth of club culture for years to come. During a short hiatus from the band, Oakley also recorded a collaborative LP with producer Giorgio Moroder which included the track Together In Electric Dreams.

With Burden no longer part of The Human League, Oakley, Sully and Catherall released Romantic? in 1990, their final album on longtime label Virgin. Octopus came out on EastWest in 1995, marking their return to the top ten on the UK album chart and securing Gold certification. Two more studio albums followed; 2001's Secrets (inspired by the reemergence of synth in popular music), and Credo a full decade later. The Human League also released a number of compilation, live and rarity albums, cementing their legacy well into the the millennium with high profile tours and festival appearances.

In 2020, The Human League announced a 40 year anniversary tour for Dare, joined on the road by Altered Image and Tom Bailey of the Thompson Twins, and promising a performance of the album in its entirety alongside select hits from across their catalogue.

5 stars : What a fantastic line up, every artist sounded the same as they were in the 80s ! The main event Human League- what a voice Philip Oakey still possesses, can't wait to go again, also great venue at Scarborough Open Air Theatre - well done to the whole production team on a fantastic show !!!!!

  • Superb

by Odin on 08/07/2025Live at Llangollen, Llangollen Pavilion - LlangollenRating: 5 out of 5

Great venue, nice atmosphere. All the acts were great. We did not expect much, but both the Christians and the Human League were fantastic. The set, and the graphics and colours for the Human League were amazing, and the old videos of the Christians in the background was very nostalgic. Both singers were fabulous, you wouldn't guess their age!

  • Great service from Ticketmaster as always

Fab evening at Cardiff Castle, great place for an outdoor gig. Blancmange and Thompson twins and then Human League. Phil Oakey still sounds the same, played all the old hits and everyone had an amazing time. Hope they'll all come back next summer to do another gig with maybe some more 80's bands???

Great venue, fantastic production. Really superb evening. Full of joy and nostalgia, we all danced and sang and just loved it! Blancmange, Thompson Twins and Human League all got 10/10!

Unbelievable that lead singer Phil Oakey who is 70 has vocals as good as they were in the 1980s. Human League are a national treasure. Great set of hits including very early ones. Support act of Tom Bailey (Thompson Twins) was brilliant. Great night! Thank you THL long may you continue.

The acoustics in the pavilion at Llangollen were fantastic. To hear The Human League live with their synthesisers was a dream come true, they sounded even better than I remember them, the girls are beautiful and together with phil their voices haven't changed with age.EXCELLENT performance and constant wardrobe change, you could well see how hard they work.well worth every penny spent!

  • Access for disabled through security

by TerryK on 07/07/2025Cardiff Castle - CardiffRating: 5 out of 5

The venue platform is great and access out great but going through security is too narrow then uphill to the castle over bark was almost impossible as kept causing my batter on my scooter to cut out as the bark is very difficult to navigate over and the cobbles also on the pathway towards the platform - It's probably fine in a wheelchair with someone pushing but not in an electric chair could do with better flat access for our next visit next Sunday. View and toilet facilities excellent though

  • Teenage dream come true

by Lisa on 07/07/2025Derby Summer Sessions - DerbyRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Thompson Twins in 1983 and they were just as good 42 years later in 2025. Sang along to every song. The Human League were fantastic and evenutally got see my teenage hearthrob of Phil Oakey live. He captured everyone in the audience and it was great to relive all their hits.

  • Best I've seen

by Ian on 07/07/2025Cardiff Castle - CardiffRating: 5 out of 5

The Human League were fantastic last night at Cardiff Castle. Hit after hit, delivered seamlessly with Phil Oakey's voice as good, if not better, than ever. A great all-round performance from a band who are still at the tope of their game.
