About

Pioneers in the UK's new wave movement

The Human League were formed in 1977 by synth duo Martyn Ware and Ian Marsh. Following a short stint as The Future, and joined by Philip Oakley and Adrian Wright, The Human League released their debut Being Boiled single in 1978. After a tour alongside Siouxsie & The Banshees and an instrumental EP, the band unveiled their full-length debut Reproduction and follow-up Travelogue before both founding members Ware and Marsh departed the band citing creative differences.

With Wright and Oakley remaining, they enlisted bassist Ian Burden alongside vocalists Susan Ann Sully and Joanne Catherall. Although Burden would go on to depart the band in 1987, that period would see The Human League release Dare, their defining 1981 record that spawned the new wave staple Don't You Want Me, alongside fellow UK top ten singles Love Action (I Believe In Love) and Open Your Heart.

Hitting No.1 on the UK album chart and going triple Platinum, Dare led the way for The Human League's synth domination of the '80s. The band went on to release Hysteria in 1984 and Crash in 1986. Both their sound and aesthetic heavily influenced the electronic scene, acting as catalysts for the growth of club culture for years to come. During a short hiatus from the band, Oakley also recorded a collaborative LP with producer Giorgio Moroder which included the track Together In Electric Dreams.

With Burden no longer part of The Human League, Oakley, Sully and Catherall released Romantic? in 1990, their final album on longtime label Virgin. Octopus came out on EastWest in 1995, marking their return to the top ten on the UK album chart and securing Gold certification. Two more studio albums followed; 2001's Secrets (inspired by the reemergence of synth in popular music), and Credo a full decade later. The Human League also released a number of compilation, live and rarity albums, cementing their legacy well into the the millennium with high profile tours and festival appearances.

In 2020, The Human League announced a 40 year anniversary tour for Dare, joined on the road by Altered Image and Tom Bailey of the Thompson Twins, and promising a performance of the album in its entirety alongside select hits from across their catalogue.

  • Human League Happiness

by Jillybean on 27/07/2025SLESSOR GARDENS - DundeeRating: 5 out of 5

Great afternoon out but a long stand, would have been happier being allowed to take seats in. Human League stole the show and well worth the wait

  • Good being local

by Taz Devil on 27/07/2025SLESSOR GARDENS - DundeeRating: 4 out of 5

Great being local, but camping chairs should definitely have been allowed, given the average age would be 50+. Getting in was easy and quick enough (went in around 1:30 pm). Queues for food were pretty bad - 1 hour for pizza. Acts were all good and weather was a bonus. Next year, allow camping chairs and have standing area for those happy and able to stand.

  • Brilliant day out

    by Maz31 on 27/07/2025SLESSOR GARDENS - DundeeRating: 5 out of 5

Whole day was fabulous only downside was having sore legs and feet as nowhere to sit for 8 hours

  • Great bands, but the venue rules 🤬

by Sandy on 27/07/2025SLESSOR GARDENS - DundeeRating: 3 out of 5

A great choice of bands on the day, but with 7 bands on from 1300 to 2300 it was a long day. The venue / promoter rules were more restrictive than any event I've ever been to and it was obviously all about squeezing as much money from the event as possible. Camping chairs and blankets were not allowed as they wanted more people taking up less room. On top of that re-admissions we're not allowed so once in you were stuck there. Considering it is a city centre venue with loads of places to go to outside the venue to sit that was ridiculous - again all about money as they wanted us spending at the on site food vendors. Again great choice of bands but i wont be going to that venue again!

  • Good fun

by Jimbo on 27/07/2025SLESSOR GARDENS - DundeeRating: 5 out of 5

Was kinda thinking that it was going to be not too good due to the bad press and comparisons to Rewind on line, but turned out great. The no chairs was an issue considering the average age of the crowd and also had to leave early as last train was 10.30pm so would have been better if it finished earlier as missed the end of Human League or the transport could have put on extra train/bus .Saying all that the groups were really good ,staff were great and the rain stayed away and had great time .

  • Human League amazing!

by Nobody on 27/07/2025SLESSOR GARDENS - DundeeRating: 5 out of 5

Slessor Gardens is a great venue for music... quite an intimate venue so great views of the stage and fabulous atmosphere. Bars were offering great service but could have done either more food vendors as the queues were crazy.. having said that there was still a goid choice. We missed the first 2 artists but really enjoyed Toyah, ABC and particularly the Himan League. Phil's voice is still amazing and the band really engaged with the crowd. All in all a great day.. thanks

  • An absolutely brilliant day…

by Andy Arbroath on 27/07/2025SLESSOR GARDENS - DundeeRating: 5 out of 5

We went to the venue as a group of 5. One wheelchair utilised due to a broken ankle. The Golden Circle was our choice. The organisers, staff and security really good. Enjoyed all of the performances and everyone got along famously well. We made some new buddies and had plenty laughs and lots of fun. Looking forward to seeing what's coming next summer. A big thank you and congratulations for such a great event 👍👏

  • 80s music

by Kerry on 27/07/2025SLESSOR GARDENS - DundeeRating: 4 out of 5

Hi, Attended the 80s festival at Slessor Gardens , Dundee. A great venue but needed more toilets and better selection of beers. Toyah and Altered Images were very good. A bit disappointed by The Christians and Big Country due to not really knowing that many of their songs(not really their fault) ABC and The Human League were superb. Thoroughly enjoyed the day

  • 80s Calling Dundee

by Cooper on 27/07/2025SLESSOR GARDENS - DundeeRating: 3 out of 5

The Human League were excellent and Phil's voice was brilliant. I'm not sure that I would rush back to Slessor Gardens as a venue. It was packed, the paved areas and shear volume of attendees made it difficult to move around or to find anywhere to have a wee seat or rest between bands. Given that it was an 11 hour day and the age profile of the attendees: this made it quite uncomfortable over the duration. The layout of the catering vans being at a different location to the bars meant double queuing to get food and a drink. Bar queues seemed well managed but the food queues were unbelievable and needed between a 30 -45 minute wait

  • Music was good

by Mumox on 27/07/2025SLESSOR GARDENS - DundeeRating: 4 out of 5

Music was good, bar good local beer. Food didn't try it. Toilets no water in a number of them from the start not acceptable. Lack of seats and not being able to take in chairs or blankets -ridiculous as have knee and back issues that mean can't stand for long. Had to sit on cold concrete!! Had to leave early because of this

  • Enjoyable sing-a-long

by IT Consultant on 14/07/2025The Piece Hall - HalifaxRating: 4 out of 5

  • Great time at a fantastic venue

by Well organised on 12/07/2025The Piece Hall - HalifaxRating: 5 out of 5

Great show , beer was a bit pricey though , would definitely go there again, (weather permitting) because it was outdoor

  • Human league

by Shaz on 12/07/2025The Piece Hall - HalifaxRating: 5 out of 5

Brilliant gig. The piece hall is the best music venue in Yorkshire. Human league and Thomson twin were really amazing

  • Top draw venue

by Top draw on 12/07/2025The Piece Hall - HalifaxRating: 5 out of 5

Piece hall was top draw with clear views of the stage from anywhere within the venue even having steps to stand of for even better views and close to stage to feel part of it. Sound stagjng is of high quality due to the shaping of the venue, so you hear everything nice and clear. All acts where brilliant as expected 89s bands rock....

  • Fantastic

  • Yet again very well organised.

by Jay on 11/07/2025Bedford Park - BedfordRating: 5 out of 5

Blancmange were good, Tom Bailey from the Thompson Twins brought out the Youth in me. The Human League were as good as they were 6 Years ago awesome. The whole evening and night was brilliant.

  • Really quite emotional!

by Pebble on 11/07/2025Bedford Park - BedfordRating: 5 out of 5

I haven't been to a gig for many years. This was also my first experience seeing The Human League perform live. What an escape to another time and another place! It has rejuvenated my desire to see more live music. Blancmange are always brilliant, after a few initial hiccups Tom Bailey was also superb. The venue at Bedford Park was also a great spot for outdoor festivals. The whole organisation was faultless from my point of view. I would go again tonight if I could.

  • Bedford summer sessions

by Sam on 11/07/2025Bedford Park - BedfordRating: 5 out of 5

Love the bands and the venue, food and drink is ridiculously expensive, why are you charging £34 for a bottle of wine???? It is putting people off going , Fake Fest is £5 for a drinks token which is reasonable.

  • The Human League

by Pauline on 11/07/2025Bedford Park - BedfordRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Amazing staff and volunteers

  • Great day. Wonderful music and venue

by IanB on 11/07/2025Bedford Park - BedfordRating: 5 out of 5

First time at TKMAXX summer festivals. Bedford park ideal venue loads of space everyone could sit in chairs or go to the front. Plenty of good food outlets reasonable prices. Driving so on Pepsi, 3.60 a can a bit steep maybe. Facilities were great limited toilet queueing. All 3 bands were great, Thompson twins maybe the best, human league had a few tech probs but phil oakey soldiered on and did a great job.
