Starting as a studio-only duo, consisting of Jonas and Anders, Katatonia was started as a way for them to explore their love of death metal. The band gained a following which led to them adding in musicians for live performances. Their first demo was Jhva Elohim Meth... The Revival. This along with a few subsequent releases garnered the band a following in the underground metal scene. 

The band's second studio album Brave Murder Day and their EP Sounds of Decay are considered to be the band’s last releases in this genre. Katatonia then shifted to favouring a cleaner approach to vocals. The band's 2001 album Last Fair Deal Gone Down showcased them moving even further away from traditional heavy metal. Carving their way from their nineties gothic-tinged doom metal to the ethereal post-metal entity they are today.

On their latest journey Sky Void of Stars, Katatonia solemnly set the stage for a nocturne both crushing and exhilarating; for it is only in the absence of stars that we can truly shine. The album is a stirring ode to the ones who are lost and astray; shipwrecked in the ocean, navigating the rough seas of life without a compass.
