About

Jools Holland OBE DL was born Julian Miles Holland on 24th January 1958 in Blackheath, Southeast London.  At the age of eight, he could play the piano fluently by ear, and by the time he reached his early teens he was proficient and confident enough to be appearing regularly in many of the pubs in South East London and the East End Docks.

At the age of 15, Jools was introduced to Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford; together they formed Squeeze, and shortly afterwards they were joined by Gilson Lavis (who had already played with, among others, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, and Max Wall) – who still drums with Jools.

In 1987, Jools formed The Jools Holland Big Band – comprising himself and Gilson Lavis. This has gradually metamorphosed into the current 19-piece Jools Holland and His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, which consists of pianist, organist, drummer, three female vocals, guitar, bass guitar, two tenor saxophones, two alto saxophones, baritone saxophone, three trumpets, and three trombones.

As well as formidable live performances, Jools has maintained a prolific recording career since signing to Warner Music in 1996, which includes the multimillion selling Jools Holland and Friends series. Notable 'friends' have included Sting, Chrissie Hynde, George Harrison, Norah Jones, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Bono, Joe Strummer, KT Tunstall, Robert Plant, Smokey Robinson, Kylie, Marc Almond, Ringo Starr, Peter Gabriel, Solomon Burke, and many more.

Jools' career as a television presenter has run parallel to his musical career.  After presenting two series of Juke Box Jury in 1989 and then 26 shows of The Happening in 1990, Jools was asked in 1992 to host a new music programme for BBC2, which combined his talent and experience as a musician with his skills as a TV presenter. This was Later... with Jools Holland.

Jools' achievements were formally recognized in June 2003, when he was awarded the OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

We try to go to this each year as a pre-Christmas treat and are never disappointed. The whole orchestra, Jools Holland and his guests are always enthusiastic and obviously enjoy the performance which ensures a fabulous evening for the audience. Ruby Turner was, as always, outstanding.

  • Oozing confidence and capability

We are lucky that Jools Holland leads such a talented orchestra - each accomplished at virtuoso level. And the guests - Marc Almond and Toby Lee wowed, while the backing singers Louise Marshall, and Sumudu Jayatilaka, stepped forward and blew us all away, I am sure that the restaurants in nearby Finiston had shattered glasses as a result of Sumuda's soprano blast! Oh and Ruby Turner at the top of her game.

It was not what I expected as being the first time seeing Jools live I and the persons I was with were all blown away with the brilliant performance which just got better and better as the night got on. Without a break, the performers led by Jools took the audience on a memorable experience - I cannot wait to book the next time they are in town

  • Great night out

by KeithF on 07/12/2024SEC Armadillo - GlasgowRating: 5 out of 5

We have been coming to see Jools Holland at the Armadillo for many years and this was the best yet. The music was fabulous and guest performers were superb. The only negative came from the dour, officious, arrogant stewards who came from Group4S. They sat like prison guards at the end of every row facing the crowd. When Jools Holland and band members encouraged the audience to get up and dance the stewards did everything they could to stop them. Fortunately the crowd won and despite the stewards efforts the audience had a good dance!

  • Just brilliant!

Our Christmas season is off to a great start. Jools is a seasoned showman who surrounds himself with the best musicians and Marc Almond has never been in better voice. It was a really great party night from start to finish. Even the support act was good. Freddie Lennox is a young man with a superb voice and I hope we hear more of him.

Enjoyed the music and all of the guests. Jools and his band were the same high standard as usual. However, the venue's require to look T the bathroom facilities, not enough for the size of the venue
