About
Spontaneous Scandinavian indie-rock that glimmers
Stockholm four-piece Girl Scout are riding the wave of indie-rock’s second coming, and shredding their own anxieties along with it.
Originating from all corners of Sweden – singer Emma Jansson is from the west coast of Sweden, bassist and lead guitarist Evelina Arvidsson Eklind and Viktor Spasov from Stockholm and drummer Per Lindberg from up north – their paths merged when all signing up to study jazz at the Royal College of Music in the country’s capital. Jamming and rehearsing together in this mode laid the groundwork for their future band’s spontaneous and free-wheeling writing methods, long before their extra-curricular activities became a priority.
Like most budding artists in recent history, the young musician’s trajectories were skewed by the pandemic. With no performances bringing in paychecks, Emma and Victor banded together to play Burt Bacharach covers to make a quick buck at socially-distanced events. But their influences of the Beach Boys, Elliott Smith, Big Thief and Phoebe Bridgers quickly began to take prominence when the pair started writing together properly, which evolved from a folk-orientated project to a more naturally fitting indie rock outfit after recruiting Evelina and Per.
“We found ourselves playing the kind of music that had gotten us hooked from the start, bands from the 90s and the Britpop revival among other things,” Jansson admitted in a recent interview. "Going back to guitar-driven songs in the classic band format felt refreshing to us, almost like it was new again.”
It may have seemed new and freeing for the newly-formed Girl Scout, but fans from further afield than Sweden clocked-on instantly, likening their 90s alternative indie-indebted, scuzzy guitar pop to the likes of Snail Mail, the Beths and Alvvays, having teased snippets on their Instagram. The band’s conscious decision to appeal to audiences outside of Sweden by singing in English paid off, as they were asked to support rising guitar star Holly Humberstone for two sold-out shows at Manchester’s Academy 2 and London’s 02 Forum Kentish Town, before even officially releasing any music.
But behind the scenes, Girl Scout were brewing all of their turbulent teenage emotions, post-education confusion and reluctant self-acceptance into their debut single, ‘Do You Remember Sally Moore?’, released in 2022 on MADE Records. They secured a UK tour support slot with Isle Of Wight up-and-comers Coach Party off that back of it, with the loose and reverberating track setting the stall for their confessional and combustible debut EP, Real Life Human Garbage – produced by Ali Chant (Soccer Mommy, Perfume Genius) and Jacknife Lee (The Killers, Bloc Party) – which followed during the first part of 2023.
Chaos reigned supreme within their musical output once again for their 2023 riff-heavy single ‘Monster,’ a quirky, Breeders-inspired introduction to their sophomore EP, Granny Music. Fleshing out their raw sound with finesse however, the emo-folk-tinged ‘Bruises’ indicated the four-piece are capable of producing gentler, reflective moments too which are destined for stadium-sized sing-a-longs. Perhaps one of the reasons Coach Party invited them on tour once again for dates at Bristol’s Thekla and London’s Scala.
