About

Post-hardcore four-piece from South Wales

The Welsh metal band Dream State shot to prominence in 2017 when the single ‘White Lies’ unexpectedly went Youtube-viral. The band’s honesty about topics from addiction to the struggle towards self-love and redemption was a breath of fresh air to UK metalheads, leading to acclaim from the likes of Kerrang!, NME and Loudwire. In the years since, they’ve delivered on that early promise with a string of brilliant releases and invigorating live shows.

Dream State (currently consisting of vocalist Jessie Powell, guitarist Aled Evans, bassist Jake Bowen and drummer Tom Connolly) formed in 2014 in Carmarthen, South Wales. They self-released debut EP Consequences in 2015 amid a dedicated gigging schedule. In 2017, their raw, vulnerable single ‘White Lies’ picked up Youtube traction, launching them into the national metal conversation as a still-unsigned band and leading to a slot at Reading & Leeds festivals. That year, they signed to the Australian metal label UNFD.

At the start of 2018, the band were named by Kerrang! as one of the Hottest Bands of 2018, and in May they released their second EP Recovery followed by an appearance at Slam Dunk Festival. In 2019 came Dream State’s debut full-length album, Primrose Path, which fully delivered on the panoramic metal sound that they had been steadily crafting. The band embarked on their first headlining tour through 2019, as well as garnering support slots for the likes of Neck Deep and Being As An Ocean, and further festival appearances at 2000 Trees and Reading & Leeds.

In 2023, the band released the Untethered EP, which Kerrang! hailed as “remarkable”. They headed across the UK on another headlining tour, as well as supporting their fellow Welsh countrymen Funeral For A Friend at the Cardiff Utilita Arena. In 2024, they’ll release the mini-album Still Dreaming.
