The Grammy-winning rapper with self-professed ‘theatre kid’ energy
Since exploding onto the scene with ‘Yucky Blucky Fruitcake’ in 2021, Doechii has established herself as an original talent with a knack for razor sharp wordplay and unconventional arrangements that nod to 90s hip hop and contemporary rap sub-genres.
Florida-born Jaylah Hickmon (AKA ‘Swamp Princess’) has always had her sights set on stardom, following in the footsteps of fellow "alt Black girls" like Lauryn Hill and Nicki Minaj. From her performing arts high school days spent posting YouTube vlogs (which, endearingly, are still public on her official channel), to gaining serious traction on TikTok, Doechii’s is an online origin story fitting for the viral superstar status that she occupies today.
In 2020, Doechii self-released her debut EP, Oh The Places You’ll Go, featuring breakout single ‘Yucky Blucky Fruitcake’. An experimental blend of spoken word and alt R&B, laced with a somewhat surreal approach to production, the track ultimately led to her signing with Top Dawg Entertainment as their first female rapper. Her next hit came in the form of ‘Persuasive’ (2022), a languid dance track which showcased Doechii’s fluid vocal style and was later re-released with SZA. ‘What It Is’ (2023) continued the momentum, incorporating the lyrics to Trillville's 'Some Cut' as an R&B hook, and earning Doechii her first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100.
Genre-blending debut album, Alligator Bites Never Heal, arrived in 2024, with fan-favourites such as ‘Denial is a River’ playfully narrating some of the trials and tribulations that come with such a rapid ascent to fame, from drug addiction to label disputes. The album went on to win ‘Best Rap Album’ at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, beating legends such as Eminem and J. Cole, and making Doechii the third woman ever to win the trophy after Lauryn Hill and Cardi B. Her track ‘Anxiety’, originally released independently in 2019, experienced a viral resurgence in 2025 and was re-released on the album’s deluxe edition, ultimately becoming one of her biggest international hits.
Amidst the critical acclaim, Doechii’s theatrical flair and commanding stage presence have remained central to her artistic identity. Her 2024 NPR Tiny Desk Concert offered a more intimate, stripped-back side of her artistry, with jazz-inflected arrangements of Alligator Bites Never Heal that placed her dynamic vocals at the fore. In contrast, she has captivated massive crowds at festivals such as Coachella, and while opening for major acts including SZA, Doja Cat, and Beyoncé. At the 2025 Grammy Awards, she delivered an ambitious performance of ‘Catfish / Denial is a River’, replete with intricate choreography, dramatic outfit changes and spoken-word interludes.
