About

UK pop insitution behind Karma Chamaleon and Do You Really Want To Hurt Me

Singer-songwriter Boy George joined bassist Mikey Craig and drummer Jon Moss to form a band called In Praise Of Lemmings in 1981. Within a year, they had changed their name to Culture Club, added Roy Hay on guitar and keyboards, and released three singles including the reggae-influenced Do You Really Want To Hurt Me. It went straight to No.1 on charts all over the world, quickly putting them on course to become one of the biggest bands of the ’80s.

At the end of 1982, Culture Club released their first full-length album Kissing To Be Clever, which featured those singles along with the huge hits Time (Clock Of The Heart) and I’ll Tumble 4 Ya.

Three more albums followed – 1983’s Colour By Numbers, 1984’s Waking Up With The House On Fire and 1986’s From Luxury To Heartache – before the new wave band’s dissolution in late 1986. They contained numerous chart-toppers including Karma Chameleon, Church Of The Poison Mind, Victims, The War Song and It’s A Miracle.

To date, Culture Club have sold more than 150 million records worldwide. As the first multi-racial band with an openly gay frontman known for his glamorous androgynous style, they broke stereotypes and challenged norms while establishing themselves as icons of British musical history and popular culture. Culture Club also won numerous awards including three BRITs for Best British Breakthrough Act, Best British Group and Best British Single (for Karma Chameleon), one Grammy for Best New Artist and two Ivor Novello Awards for Best Pop Song and Best Selling A-Side (both also for Karma Chameleon). Their song Time (Clock Of The Heart) was named No.107 on the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame’s list of 500 Songs That Shaped Rock And Roll.

Culture Club have reunited for several performances and projects since splitting up. After about 12 years, they got back together and released the 1999 album Don’t Mind If I Do before calling it quits again in 2002. They also returned in 2018 with their sixth studio album Life – containing their first original material in nearly 20 years – and went out on a huge tour to support it.

Culture Club performed a special livestream from The SSE Arena, Wembley in London called Rainbow In The Dark in December 2020.

In 2024, Culture Club announced a tour performing Kissing To Be Clever and Colour By Numbers in full and in order, with support from Tony Hadley and Heaven 17.

  • Top draw concert!

    by Paul on 16/12/2024The O2 - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

Vocals from all the acts performing was superb, we loved how George told the story of the bands early years and how their music progressed. Even at 63, George has still most certainly got it.

  • An incredible trip down memory lane

Boy George and Culture Club, feat. Heaven 17, were superb. Tony Hadley as the support had the audience well and truly warmed up. He was brilliant

  • Wonderful trip down memory lane

What an evening! Started with Heaven 17, who were great. Followed by the remarkable vocals of Tony Hadley singing old Spandau Ballet songs. And then, the moment I've been waiting for since I was 8 years old, Culture Club (sadly minus Jon Moss). And they did not disappoint! An amazing spectacle of footage and beautiful images provided the backdrop to the inimitable Boy George's beautiful vocals singing most of the songs from the band's first two albums. Wow! Boy George was on fine form, chatting and giggling before each song, which provided wonderful context for the audience. My personal highlight was the dramatically staged Victims - a true spine-tingling moment for the whole of the O2. Thank you, Culture Club, the long wait to see you was well worth it.

  • bit of a let down

was really looking forward to seeing culture club, felt disappointed with Boy George's voice, preferred Tony Hadley tbh, the venue was too big for his vocals i wouldn't look back and remember how good it was, just average

  • brilliant nostalgic evening

Great evening with 2 fantastic support acts in Heaven 17 and Tony Hadley. They really got everyone in the mood for the main event which didn't disappoint with Boy George on fine form and some excellent music and vocals from the band.Heard some new songs I didn't know and loved, don't know why they weren't released as singles in their own right! Event staff were great and fantastic evening had by all. Lovely start to the Xmas countdown. Hope they do it all again next year! - no pressure guys and gals and those who haven't committed to a gender!!

  • A wonderful nostalgic experience of 80's music

by OMT on 16/12/2024bp pulse LIVE - BirminghamRating: 4 out of 5

It was an impressive line up with Heaven 17 and Tony Hadley before Culture Club. I was a big fan of Spandau Ballet and Tony still has an incredible voice. He belted out hit after hit during his set, and True took me back to the time I saw Spandau Ballet when it just reached number one in the charts. I loved all the 80's songs they played between Tony Hadley and Culture Club and it was wonderful that the crowd sung through all of them - Come On Eileen was a wonderful one to finish with. I thought it was very clever by Culture Club to tell the story of their journey as a band and play the appropriate songs along the way and Karma Chameleon was a great way to finish the night :)

  • Fantastic night

    by Ch on 16/12/2024The O2 - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Culture Club many times over the years and they never fail to live up to my expectations. The whole band, set up, sound was first class. George was on top form and looked so happy. Being a south east Londoner myself I can relate to all what he was talking about. I would go again tonight if I could! A very happy trip down memory lane with the songs which made me like Culture Club all those years ago. Would be great if he performed at the 02 again next year.

  • Disappointing!

by Stevodas on 16/12/2024OVO Hydro - GlasgowRating: 1 out of 5

Heaven 17 and Tony Hadley were excellent. We could hear what they were singing and saying in between songs, but Culture Club were dreadful. Music was away too high and you couldn't hear the words, it was just a blast of noise. You couldn't understand what he was saying in between songs as there was an echo when Boy George was talking. Disappointing!!

Unfortunately I could not make it to this event due to unforeseen circumstances, but hope to make it to another show if I can . I have given 5 stars purely because I'm sure it would be worthy of them.

  • Concert Amazing - Parking Not SO!!

    by J&S on 16/12/2024bp pulse LIVE - BirminghamRating: 4 out of 5

Got to NEC early - drove around for an hour trying to find correct pre booked carpark to use - no info was available on the printed tickets and signage was shocking! Concert was amazing - loved every minute of it and the 3 acts (heaven 17, Tony Hadley and of course Culture Clue) didnt fail to impress. Getting out was the usual bun fight taking over an hour to get out of the carpark and finally get on the road. NEC you know the chaos that comes from 10000 people trying to leave at the same time - you need to improve this part of the experience and charging £12 for a can of wine - you can afford too.

  • Great 80s feel

    by Jays8018 on 16/12/2024bp pulse LIVE - BirminghamRating: 4 out of 5

Iconic band of the 80s. Still have a great sound with amazing classic songs. Very well put together concert with a little history of the band told by Boy George in between songs. Great lighting and stage presents. Would recommend watching.

  • Amazing!

Fabulous back story recounted by George with brilliant graphics and songs throughout the journey to back it all up, and the vocals were just amazing!

  • What can i say

by Andy on 16/12/2024bp pulse LIVE - BirminghamRating: 3 out of 5

The support acts were great Heaven 17 and Tony outstanding Hadley. Culture Club were good but must admit of the 17 or songs they did only new about 7 I think his voice is still good Also the venue we sat next to a fat person and she was on a quarter of my seat which spoilt the event for me. To be honest if i attend another and get the same scenario i would ask for a partial refund and the fat person should have to pay more.

  • INCREDIBLE!!!
