About
Bat for Lashes is the project of Natasha Khan who, since her 2006 debut album, Fur and Gold, has reached the status of indie rock royalty while embellishing the genre in a graceful ethereality.
Born in London in 1979 to an English mother and Pakistani father, Khan’s musical journey began at the age of 11 when she learnt to play the piano. Inspired by the art-pop of bands such as Talking Heads, she soon began earning comparisons to boundary pushers such as Kate Bush and Björk when she released her debut single 'The Wizard' in the mid 2000s. She released her debut full-length Fur and Gold in 2006, which Thom Yorke famously likened to Grimm's Fairy Tales. It featured the hit 'What's A Girl To Do?' and would later be nominated for the Mercury Prize and receive Gold status in the UK.
Khan released her second album Two Suns in 2009, which featured collaborations from other left-field artists Yeasayer and Scott Walker. Dark and brooding, the album was described by Pitchfork as a "significant step forward from her debut," and included the tracks 'Daniel’, 'Glass’ and 'Moon and Moon’.
Three years and much international touring later, Khan released The Haunted Man, coming off the back of a creative rut which she resolved by immersing herself in the worlds of dance and illustration. Its lead single 'Laura’ remains a fan favourite.
After working on a series of short films including 2016’s Madly, Khan released her fourth studio album The Bride, conceptually based on the idea of a bride widowed on her wedding day. In keeping with its theme, Bat For Lashes performed in a number of churches, with fans asked to dress for the special day.
In 2017, Khan and her partner moved from the British capital to Los Angeles, beginning work on her fourth album. Lost Girls was released in September 2019, introduced by the lead single 'Kids in the Dark’. The album made many best of year lists, even topping that of Good Morning America.
