About
Aloe Blacc is an American singer and rapper whose real name is Nathaniel Dawkins. He is known for his solo work, as well as his collaborations with a range of other artists. His first musical project was the group Emanon, which he formed with DJ Exile. They released three albums: Steps Through Time in 2001, 2002's Imaginary Friends and The Waiting Room in 2005. His first solo release was the album Shine Through in 2006.
His big break came with the release of the 2010 track, I Need A Dollar, which got to number two in both the UK and Ireland. It was also used as the theme tune for the US show, How To Make It In America. Following this he released his second solo album, Good Things. This reached number eight in the UK charts and went gold. To support this album he undertook an extensive tour, including performances at Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival, Glastonbury in the UK and The Australian Falls Festival. In 2013, he released the EP, Wake Me Up. Aloe Blacc's third album was the 2014 release, Lift Your Spirit. During the recording of this he worked with artists such as Pharrell, Harold Lilly and DJ Khalil.
One of Aloe Blacc's biggest hits to date was his collaboration with Avicii. He co-wrote and featured on the 2013 track, Wake Me Up. The song reached No. 1 in the UK and Ireland, as well as over 100 other countries. It became the quickest selling song of the year in the UK. In its first week it sold 267,000 singles. During his early career, Aloe Blacc recorded tracks and toured with Lootpack, a French collective of musicians. There were also collaborations with Jazz Liberatorz, a French jazz band. In 2012, he became part of Roseaux, along with Emile Omar, Clement Petit and Alex Finkin. They released the self-titled album, Roseaux, on which Blacc's vocals featured on all the tracks. He has also appeared on tracks for The Kenneth Bager Experience, The Bamboos and Wax Tailor.
Aloe Blacc's music has been influenced by a number of sources. Many of his tracks feature the sounds of Marvin Gaye, Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Gil Scott-Heron, Bob Marley and Cat Stevens. In 2011 he won the Worker's Voice Award. He has also been nominated for two BRIT Awards in 2012 and a Soul Train Award in 2011.
