About
Wretch 32 is the stage alter ego of Jermaine Sinclair, a British rapper from London's Tottenham. Originally an MC on the grime scene, Sinclair was an original member of the Combination Chain Gang collective before creating new band The Movement. Sinclair's father was a reggae DJ in Tottenham's Tiverton Estate, and Sinclair cites a range of influences on his early musical style, beginning with reggae and moving through the UK's urban hip-hop and grime scenes.
Wretch 32's first studio album, Wretchrospective, was released in 2008 just before he signed up to the Ministry of Sound record label. That year alone he had three single releases that charted in the top five in the UK charts from his first album Black and White, which sold over one million records. His first single release was Traktor, released in January 2011. The track received critical and commercial acclaim, and was selected as a BBC Radio 1 anthem that December. The second release from the album was Unorthodox, on which Wretch collaborated with Example. The single Don't Go was released in August 2011 and featured Josh Kumra, and Forgiveness was released in December of that year, featuring Etta Bond. The final single from the album was Hush Little Baby, which featured singer Ed Sheeran. Wretch has also enjoyed success by collaborating with other artists and working as a feature musician, including his collaboration on Hangover with Starboy Nathan in 2011. He featured on Teardrop, the 2011 Children in Need single, Angel's Go in, Go hard and Devlin's Off with their Heads.
In 2012 Coca-Cola and Adidas approached him to front their London Olympics campaigns, exposing his music to a more mainstream audience. The scheduled release date for his third album, Growing Over Life, is in 2014, which will follow single releases Doing OK and Blackout, featuring Shakka. Wretch is also collaborating with Jacob Banks and George the Poet, and has worked with Beenie Man, Angel and Eshraque iSHi Mughal on his latest album. In 2012, Wretch completed a UK arena tour, supporting Example, and then headlined his own second tour later that year. Further tours are planned in the UK and overseas.
Wretch 32 has been nominated for music awards, including the MP3 Music Awards of 2009, MTV's Brand New for 2011 category, and the Sound of 2011 BBC poll. He won the Best International Act category of the BET Awards 2012 and the 2009 award for Best Hiphop Mixtape at the Official Mixtape Awards.
