About

Pioneers in the UK's new wave movement

The Human League were formed in 1977 by synth duo Martyn Ware and Ian Marsh. Following a short stint as The Future, and joined by Philip Oakley and Adrian Wright, The Human League released their debut Being Boiled single in 1978. After a tour alongside Siouxsie & The Banshees and an instrumental EP, the band unveiled their full-length debut Reproduction and follow-up Travelogue before both founding members Ware and Marsh departed the band citing creative differences.

With Wright and Oakley remaining, they enlisted bassist Ian Burden alongside vocalists Susan Ann Sully and Joanne Catherall. Although Burden would go on to depart the band in 1987, that period would see The Human League release Dare, their defining 1981 record that spawned the new wave staple Don't You Want Me, alongside fellow UK top ten singles Love Action (I Believe In Love) and Open Your Heart.

Hitting No.1 on the UK album chart and going triple Platinum, Dare led the way for The Human League's synth domination of the '80s. The band went on to release Hysteria in 1984 and Crash in 1986. Both their sound and aesthetic heavily influenced the electronic scene, acting as catalysts for the growth of club culture for years to come. During a short hiatus from the band, Oakley also recorded a collaborative LP with producer Giorgio Moroder which included the track Together In Electric Dreams.

With Burden no longer part of The Human League, Oakley, Sully and Catherall released Romantic? in 1990, their final album on longtime label Virgin. Octopus came out on EastWest in 1995, marking their return to the top ten on the UK album chart and securing Gold certification. Two more studio albums followed; 2001's Secrets (inspired by the reemergence of synth in popular music), and Credo a full decade later. The Human League also released a number of compilation, live and rarity albums, cementing their legacy well into the the millennium with high profile tours and festival appearances.

In 2020, The Human League announced a 40 year anniversary tour for Dare, joined on the road by Altered Image and Tom Bailey of the Thompson Twins, and promising a performance of the album in its entirety alongside select hits from across their catalogue.

  • Memorable night

by Ken on 14/12/2024First Direct Arena - LeedsRating: 4 out of 5

Sophie Ellis Bextor warm up performance was excellent, crowd pleaser. Human league stage set was very dramatic and impressive. Show was good but would have preferred more well known songs, not much audience participation between opening and closing couple of songs. Saw Human League in York and enjoyed the set there more.

  • Absolutely fantastic, just fabulous

Phil Oakey has such great stage presence, great evening out. Loved it. A blast from the past.

  • Amazing!!!

by Vicky on 14/12/2024First Direct Arena - LeedsRating: 5 out of 5

I've been so excited about the show and I wasn't disappointed. Absolutely amazing! Access and entry to the venue was seamless - I was worried about big queues and bottlenecks but not at all! T'Pau and Sophie Ellis Bextor were fantastic- I'll definitely be looking for tickets for them in future - especially Sophie Ellis Bextor. The human League were just awesome! The set, playlist, costumes, band- just everything was so much more than I could have expected! Just a note about Ticketmaster- I was worried about using the platform because I've heard some horror stories, but honestly- the experience couldn't have been smoother. The site and app were so easy to use, there was loads of comms prior to the event and I feel really confident about using the service in future.

  • Great - The Human League, Sophie EB and T'Pau were great

by Limekiln on 14/12/2024First Direct Arena - LeedsRating: 5 out of 5

Fabulous show - T'Pau was a great warm and S-E-B had everyone up dancing! The HL playlist and stage were very good - all the hits. The centre screen really made it better so you could see the band and screen together!

  • Human League a mixed story.

by Scrufty on 14/12/2024First Direct Arena - LeedsRating: 2 out of 5

They are a class act as we're the support and paid top dollar to be as close to the front as possible sat in row B. However event was ruined by people standing up and dancing in row A. For a seated event not one steward asked them to be seated. If people want to dance then they should buy a ticket in the right zone were dancing is permitted and not be so selfish and inconsiderate. So great band, but sadly a naff and ill disciplined venue.

  • Leeds 2024, fantastic

by Electric Dreams on 14/12/2024First Direct Arena - LeedsRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic concert, could not fault any of the performance or the staging. Close your eyes and you are transported back to the Eighties. Simply class.

Had a great evening at Glasgow Ovo Hydro watching The Human League. Added e tea was T'Pau and Sophie Ellis-Bexter. Phil's voice was brilliant and I could almost believe I was twenty again apart from the dodgy knees. Raised the roof with "Don't you want me baby ?" Loved the whole evening.
