About
Emotive singer-songwriter from Brighton
Sam Tompkins mixes modern R&B with hip hop and pop stylings, taking cues from the likes of Justin Timberlake and Ed Sheeran. Hailing from Brighton, he got his start in music busking in the streets. With his sincere songwriting and wide vocal range, he regularly drew large crowds and even landed a role in Noel Clarke’s 2016 film Brotherhood.
In early 2017, at the age of 19, Tompkins won MTV’s Cover Of The Month competition with his version of 'I Got You' by Bebe Rexha. On 31 December, he released his debut EP Coloured Emotions, featuring the track 'Control' with Dorset grime artist Isaiah Dreads.
Tompkins took the internet by storm in 2018 after uploading videos to YouTube that showed him playing original songs as well as busking with his friend Ren. This led to the popularity of tracks Wife You and Blind Eyed, the latter a collaboration with Ren.
In October 2019, Tompkins not only dropped his debut EP From My Sleeve To The World, which included 'Faded' featuring Birmingham grime MC Jaykae, but also sold out a his first headline tour of the UK and Ireland. He capped off the year with the acoustic guitar track 'Not So Grey', offering reflections on loneliness and mental health.
Tompkins continued to deliver new music throughout 2020. On Valentine’s Day he dropped the heartfelt tune 'You’re The Love Of My Life' and went on to headline Annie Mac’s AMP series in early March. During lockdown he unveiled his Isolation Diaries EP, supporting it with a virtual world tour in May during which he performed four separate stripped down shows for fans in Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Summer saw the arrival of the song 'Kings', while Tompkins dropped the emotion-drenched single 'Charlie' in early autumn.
“My music is from the heart. It’s honest and very autobiographical,” he said in an interview for Live Nation TV. “No song sounds the same as another. The only consistency is storytelling and honesty.”
Tompkins finally announced his debut album hi, my name is insecure in 2024, set for release that July. The news was accompanied by the single 'dead to me' and news of an extensive UK tour for late 2024.
