About
Disarmingly honest synth-pop star-in-the-making
Unabashedly vulnerable and self-deprecating when it comes to his songwriting, Michael Aldag prides himself as an artist that speaks to his Gen Z audience, and speaks his truth no matter how painstaking it might be.
Like many budding singer-songwriters, artist Michael Aldag’s notoriety grew exponentially and “accidentally” throughout the pandemic when he took to TikTok to showcase his talents. But his story with music started long before he amassed multi-millions of likes across his social media platforms and nearly as many followers.
Growing up on The Wirral Peninsula in Merseyside, Aldag’s love of music was inspired by his beloved grandmother, who set him on the path towards singing in choirs and school plays. Performing in front of people for the first time ignited the fire in his belly. But pop music was where Michael’s heart lay however, particularly awed by the likes of The Killers and The 1975, and their ability to hold a crowd’s undivided attention in the palm of their hands. Plying his trade at local open mics with his own compositions, the pandemic struck. Forced to engage with audiences via social media alone, it proved to be Aldag’s breakthrough.
Self-describing his videos as “dossing about”, the ambitious singer showcased his talents across music and even comedy, uploading scatty sketches alongside his latest musical offerings. His all-in approach resonated, which remains Aldag’s mantra when it comes to music-making. “Nobody’s just funny or just sad,” he revealed in a later interview. “I put all my emotions into music. It’s a release for me, a way to deal with emotions in my life and it always has been since I was fourteen.”
His self-released debut EP, Navel-gazing, in 2021 indicated his unfiltered creativity: tackling 21st century existentialism, ennui, heartache and happiness with brutal, bruised honesty, Aldag immediately drew comparisons to Bastille and Lewis Capaldi in The Sunday Times, Notion magazine, and the Line of Best Fit. Armed with his uniquely whip-smart, razor-sharp lyricism wrapped in glittering synth-pop production, Aldag looked every inch the popstar.
No wonder why: after several subsequent single releases including his yearning anthem ‘POLAROID’ which featured on 2022 EP SOCIALIZING having signed to UK-based label 3 Beat / Universal Music Group - he sold out his first bonafide tour. “My aim is to make people really feel alive,” Aldag promised. A promise he kept to. Having swooned audiences around the country, he was snapped to perform at BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend, supporting George Ezra, Caity Baser, Dean Lewis, and his own inspiration in Bastille.
Singles ‘smoothie’ and ‘girlfriends’ made waves on TikTok in 2023, as Michael readied his debut album for the following year. sorry for everything propelled Aldag into 2024, who performed stand-out sets at prestigious festivals like Reading and Leeds, Y Not, and Victorious Festival, before embarking on a UK tour with gigs at Glasgow’s Stereo, the O2 Academy in Leicester, and London’s Scala.
