About

Noir alt pop outsider with cinematic allure

Embodying the characters that propel the storytelling of her alluring and noirish alt-pop, Sheffield-born rising star Gia Ford delves into the fringes of society to fuel her razor-sharp creative vision.

There’s a rich tradition of LGBTQIA+ musicians adopting different personas to reach new audiences with their creative output, and Molly McCormick aka Gia Ford is the latest in a long line of artists backing her vision with a striking visual identity. Evoking American pop culture of the 1980s with her pseudonym, decked out in boxy shoulder-padded suits and greased, slick-back hair, Ford made an instant impact after debuting her artist persona on social media.

Discovered directly via Instagram and signed immediately by UK label Dirty Hit on the strength of a 60-second vocal-only recording, the clamour for her singular talent was evident. Gia Ford was then afforded the opportunity to draw from her musical inspirations – which included artists such as Björk, Queens of the Stone Age, Dusty Springfield, Billie Holiday, Electric Light Orchestra and Duran Duran – as she steadily worked away for three years on her first offering, 2019’s Poster Boy

Slick dreamy pop songs such as ‘Turbo Dreams’, ‘Girl’, and ‘High Class Tragedy’ exuded the sort of energy her suave character embodied – coupled with her disinterested yet unavoidable stare, she won alt pop fans over almost immediately. Working with Spector frontman Fred Macpherson and Dev Hynes throughout the songwriting process encouraged Ford to realise her knack for storytelling, which elevated her visual approach to music-making. Whilst her own identity was clearly important, Ford found more inspiration from telling other stories than her own.

Though with her follow-up, she took a hairpin turn: “I was super obsessed with dark stuff and the dark corner of the world as a child, and now I’m older and I’ve come back to it.” Citing cinema as a primary influence – namely the Brad Pitt-starring 1993 violent road movie Kalifornia – and absorbing aspects from the fringes of society, Gia Ford released her atmospheric sophomore EP, Murder In The Dark, at the tail end of 2020.

Establishing herself as a songwriting powerhouse, Gia Ford brought stories about the downtrodden to the dangerous into the spotlight with her sultry and seductive voice. Working again with Macpherson, Ford further cultivated her filmic, noirish realm.

Standalone single ‘A Car Crash For Two’ followed in 2022, with Self Esteem selecting her to support for a very special hometown show in Sheffield off the back. To celebrate, Gia Ford released the brooding single ‘Alligator’ in 2023, which marked a breakthrough era for the budding alt pop star.

That same year, Ford was revealed as one of the First Fifty artists to be named for The Great Escape Festival in 2024, which coincided with the release of single ‘Falling In Love Again’. With a gig scheduled at London’s The Lower Third in January 2024, Gia Ford is tentatively teasing her debut full-length after switching to Chrysalis Records.
