About

UK pop insitution behind Karma Chamaleon and Do You Really Want To Hurt Me

Singer-songwriter Boy George joined bassist Mikey Craig and drummer Jon Moss to form a band called In Praise Of Lemmings in 1981. Within a year, they had changed their name to Culture Club, added Roy Hay on guitar and keyboards, and released three singles including the reggae-influenced Do You Really Want To Hurt Me. It went straight to No.1 on charts all over the world, quickly putting them on course to become one of the biggest bands of the ’80s.

At the end of 1982, Culture Club released their first full-length album Kissing To Be Clever, which featured those singles along with the huge hits Time (Clock Of The Heart) and I’ll Tumble 4 Ya.

Three more albums followed – 1983’s Colour By Numbers, 1984’s Waking Up With The House On Fire and 1986’s From Luxury To Heartache – before the new wave band’s dissolution in late 1986. They contained numerous chart-toppers including Karma Chameleon, Church Of The Poison Mind, Victims, The War Song and It’s A Miracle.

To date, Culture Club have sold more than 150 million records worldwide. As the first multi-racial band with an openly gay frontman known for his glamorous androgynous style, they broke stereotypes and challenged norms while establishing themselves as icons of British musical history and popular culture. Culture Club also won numerous awards including three BRITs for Best British Breakthrough Act, Best British Group and Best British Single (for Karma Chameleon), one Grammy for Best New Artist and two Ivor Novello Awards for Best Pop Song and Best Selling A-Side (both also for Karma Chameleon). Their song Time (Clock Of The Heart) was named No.107 on the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame’s list of 500 Songs That Shaped Rock And Roll.

Culture Club have reunited for several performances and projects since splitting up. After about 12 years, they got back together and released the 1999 album Don’t Mind If I Do before calling it quits again in 2002. They also returned in 2018 with their sixth studio album Life – containing their first original material in nearly 20 years – and went out on a huge tour to support it.

Culture Club performed a special livestream from The SSE Arena, Wembley in London called Rainbow In The Dark in December 2020.

In 2024, Culture Club announced a tour performing Kissing To Be Clever and Colour By Numbers in full and in order, with support from Tony Hadley and Heaven 17.

We went to Motorpoint Arena last night to see Culture Club, Tony Hadley and Heaven 17. A great night going back to the 1980's. Heaven 17 were first act and played their hits in a too short set, same for Tony Hadley were sang a number of Spandau Ballet hits and had a great sing along to True then Culture Club were last act on and sang songs from the first 2 albums, which I am afraid most of which I hadn't heard before however it was a great night finished by a sing along to Karma chameleon! Would recommend to anyone who loves 80's music.

The 3 ' Oldies ' gave us some fantastic memories of Days gone by, Firstly Heaven 17, some classics finished off with their worldwide hit ' Temptation ' was brilliant. Up step Tony Hadley, with his smooth silky voice, blasting out many Spandau Ballet hits from the 1980's onwards - No difference in quality to when we first saw them all those years ago. Culture club / Boy George - Well what can you say - Great Voice / Great Entertainer, backed by Mikey Craig and Roy Hay from the original Line-up. The musicians and backing singers were first class. George blasted out some old favourites together with several Big Hits from the past. All in all it was a brilliant Night

  • Cardiff Monday 9 Dec 2024

by Fan on 10/12/2024Utilita Arena Cardiff - CardiffRating: 3 out of 5

Enjoyed Heaven 17 as warm up, Tony Hadley was FANTASTIC. His voice is amazing and can't wait to see him again! Should've given him more concert time as Culture Club went on far too long! People were losing interest and leaving before the end, due to new songs and cover versions, even missing Karma Charmeleon. George's voice is not good for every song but his backing singers and band were excellent. Crowd were expecting their hits but we had over 5 new ones. Maybe if Culture Club go out on their own crowd would appreciate the new songs more?! I won't be there though!

by Sara on 10/12/2024Utilita Arena Cardiff - CardiffRating: 5 out of 5

What a show!!! Culture Club rocked the house with Boy George at his best along with outstanding musicians and backup singers. A lively, upbeat show that can stand the test of time, some lesser known songs were performed along with firm favourites. What's not to like!

Well what can I say! Ab so literally fabulous!! Loved the costume changes. The backdrop set was great and bought back several memories. George still has it in him. Well worth the money as not only 1, 2 but 3 child hood legends groups.

This is the second time I've seen them, I enjoyed the first time but second time was absolutely brilliant I can remember buying the albums when I was a teenager. I'm 60 in a couple of months. We had good seats. Boy George did them proud

  • Fabulous, Energetic and More

by 80's Lady on 09/12/2024First Direct Arena - LeedsRating: 5 out of 5

Queues to the venue were long but passed through security quickly. The venue is enermous, many levels. Be aware that drinks and food here are extortionate prices (£4.40 for a bottle of Oasis). The merchandise of T-Shirts, caps, hoodies etc were expensive (£40 per T-shirt) but super quality. I was disappointed there were no vinyl albums, cds or show programmes to purchase. The seating was clearly marked and although at the top row I could see the stage and acts easily. The gig was an amazimg opportunity to relive some of the music of my youth and Boy George did not disappoint. As flamboyant and vibrant as ever and much to be admired. The sound quality was superb and the audience captivated by everything. I was not alone in singing along enjoying every moment. The line up of Heaven 17 and Spandau Balllet were captivating but did not come close to Boy George's 2 hour performamce.
