Sonic Youth were formed in 1981 and first came the serious attention of the music press with 1985 album Bad Moon Rising.
This was followed by EVOL in 1986 and Sister in 1987, each album garnering critical praise if not commercial success. 1988's double album Daydream Nation however was hailed as a modern masterpiece on its releace and paved the way for great things to come, beginning with the group's move to its first major label.
From there, the band released 1990s albums Goo, Dirty, Experimental Jet Set Trash and No Star, achieving some commercial success, built upon their longstanding fanbase.
1995's Washing Machine was their most well received album by critics for many years and showcased the songwriting skills had not waned. Most recent release, 2004's Sonic Nurse is the band's first as a five piece
