About You and What Army

In 2007, You and What Army was born.

Quickly establishing a large fan-base in their local area with their eclectic, unique sound; combining euphoric trance synths, crushingly heavy guitars and danceable bouncy hip hop into a spectacular live show that forced people to take notice.

October 2007 dawned and YAWA were voted onto T4's TV Show "MobileACT Unsigned" by both the general public (being 2nd overall in the online vote) and also by the producers who were captivated by their sound. Getting through to the finals and finishing in the Top 10 bands, with celebrities such as Calvin Harris, Jo Whiley and Alex James all providing rave reviews of the band.

After MobileACT unsigned, YAWA toured the UK and gigged constantly, then the original drummer left after a strong calling to pursue his Mormon mission; being replaced by Zak, who had recently come out of hospital after having his bowel removed. Zak was initiated in the best way possible, straight out of hostpital, straight into the limelight.

At this point, we hit the studio hard with a single deal through "Babycakes" - a massive alternative clothing company turned record label. Unfortunately, the label had troubles getting organised and after some time we were forced to make the decision to go it alone.

Unfazed and as determined as ever, we constructed our own studio in which we produce, record, mix and master all our tracks ourselves.
While taking a break from gigging to work on new material, musical differences within the band meant two of the members left. Never a band to back down, YAWA soon held auditions and from all the applicants we recruited two new members, making the new (and current) line-up:

Dave - Synths, DJ, Vocals, Production
Zak - Drums, backing vocals
Kieran - Guitar & Vocals
Jamie - Bass & backing vocals

This line-up spent months in the studio, honing their song writing skills, bonding and producing their first EP "Soundtrack to the Apocalypse". Dave's experience with electronic music genres such as Trance, Hip Hop and Drum and Bass provided the basis for adding influences from guitarist Kieran's repertoire - having come from a background of playing acoustically, this was quite a change of pace for him and he relished the chance to add his powerful singing vocals and unhealthy obsession with gorgeous harmonies into the mix.

Combining this with bassist Jamie's experience from being in a heavy metal band and his similarly unhealthy obsession with progressive rock, resulting in interesting and yet catchy basslines, and drummer Zak's ferocious playing style driving the tracks forward, being another complete change of scene as he'd made the leap from his previous Indie group to this high-octane intense experience of You and What Army; the band had never been stronger.

The fresh new band gigged with their fresh new sound. They perfected their stage show and have played to thousands of people across the country, captivating crowds and enticing new fans - this was especially true after the band won the online "Red Bull Bedroom Jam" competition, where both fans and distinguished judges voted You and What Army to play 5 festivals over the summer of 2010.

And that brings us to now. The future? Well YAWA have features on Kerrang radio and BBC Introducing regional shows being lined up, interviews with Kerrang magazine, Rock Sound (Who, incidentally, voted them 2nd best unsigned act of 2008 and 3rd best in 2009) and NME. There are festivals to be played and new songs to be written for their next release.

Right now they're in the studio perfecting their sound for the upcoming tour and proceeding shows.
