About

Sheffield’s metalcore powerhouse

Known as one of the most successful exports of the UK metalcore scene, While She Sleeps began as a bunch of school mates from Sheffield, dreaming of taking over the world.

It’s clear they’ve never forgotten those beginnings. Apart from their razor-sharp riffs and scream-along anthems, what stands out most about the band is their positive, open-arms attitude and their endless gratitude for their fanbase (also known as the Sleeps Society).

Vocalist Lawrence ‘Loz’ Taylor, guitarists Sean Long and Mat Welsh, bassist Aaran McKenzie and drummer Adam Savage became While She Sleeps in 2006, releasing their debut EP, And This Is Just the Start, the same year. Over the ensuing years they built a grassroots fanbase through hard touring, leading to the release of their 2010 EP, The North Stands For Nothing, to critical acclaim from Kerrang! and Metal Hammer. In 2011 came UK and European tours with heroes of the genre such as Sylosis, Silverstein and Asking Alexandria, as well as appearances at Slam Dunk and Sonisphere festivals. They ended the year with their first headline tour.

The band spent summer 2012 appearing at festival line-ups for Download and Rock Im Park. That August, While She Sleeps released their debut full-length album, This Is The Six, via Search and Destroy and Sony Records. The album solidified the technical yet emotive sound they’d debuted on The North Stands For Nothing, to great success. Blistering singles ‘Dead Behind The Eyes’ and ‘This Is For Six’ received airplay on BBC Radio 1, while the album achieved glowing reviews including five stars from Kerrang!. The band completed another headline tour in support of the album, plus opened for Architects across Europe.

2013 brought the band extended international touring, including appearances at the Soundwave Festivals in Australia, a North American tour in support of Parkway Drive, and a slot on the Vans Warped Tour through the summer. In 2014, the band appeared at Download and Reading & Leeds festivals, and finished the year supporting legendary bands In Flames and Papa Roach across the UK and Europe.

While She Sleeps released their second album, Brainwashed, in 2015, to further critical acclaim. Their success continued to snowball; they supported the album with a huge co-headlining UK and Europe tour with Cancer Bats, more festival appearances and another stint across the Atlantic on the Vans Warped Tour. The following year came support slots for Bullet for My Valentine and Bring Me The Horizon.

The band released the crowdfunded third album, You Are We, in 2017 after departing their label. Featuring anthemic songwriting and epic production, the album received yet more universal acclaim, and single ‘Silence Speaks’ featuring Oliver Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon was named Radio 1’s Hottest Record in the World.

In 2019 came the band’s fourth album, So What?, which showed off a more experimental and electronic sound. They supported it with their biggest headlining tour to that date, finishing with an expansive show at the London Roundhouse. That year they toured the US and Australia with Architects, while appearing at countless festivals across the summer. They completed their first North American headline tour at the start of 2020.

2021 saw the release of fifth album Sleeps Society, which the band unveiled along with an innovative Patreon subscription programme for fans. The album featured life-affirming tracks such as ‘Nervous’, featuring Simon Neil of Biffy Clyro, with The Guardian claiming the band had “finally reach[ed] their pop potential” in a four-star album review. The band got close to their fans with an intimate club tour in support of the album, including three nights at London’s Underworld. In 2022, they headlined an Australian tour, and appeared at Bring Me The Horizon’s Malta Weekender. They ended that year supporting Parkway Drive across the UK and Europe.

In September 2023, While She Sleeps released the genre-blending self-acceptance anthem ‘Self Hell’ as well as announcing their sixth album of the same name, due March 2024. The same month, they made their biggest headline appearance to date at a sold-out Alexandra Palace, in a set that Kerrang! called “one of the most thrilling heavy shows of the year.” They’re set to bring the same energy to Download Festival in 2024.

    Support was better

by ermunday on 08/12/2024O2 Forum Kentish Town - London

I have had the pleasure of seeing while she sleeps 4 times and I believe they've gone progressively downhill each time. This time, the stage was well done but the setlist was horrific and the support was 100 times better. Thrown dominated the entire night and was surprised by currents being better than the headliner. Do better

    4 bands 4 amazing sets

by Klunk on 08/12/2024O2 Victoria Warehouse Manchester - Manchester

All four bands were amazing Thrown were the odd band out but if you like a bit more hard-core then you won't be disappointed (I wasn't as I came to see these and Currents) but the only downside was the sound for While she sleeps as you couldn't really hear Loz which was a shame jut musically they were spot on. Resolve 5/5 Thrown 4/5 Currents 5/5 While she sleeps 4/5
