Since breaking out in 2020 with TikTok hit ‘Seasons’, wave to earth have enjoyed back-to-back sold out tours across Europe and the US, bringing their downtempo, jazz-influenced indie rock to adoring audiences.
Based in Seoul, South Korea, wave to earth formed in 2019 and have quickly become a global sensation for their dreamy, lo-fi sound that deftly knits delicate melodies and introspective lyrics with jazzy licks and indie pop influences. Consisting of three members, singer-songwriter and guitarist Daniel Kim and drummer Dong Kyu Shin initially met in 2012 while auditioning for a church band. Though they didn’t end up joining the church group, they became friends and began playing together casually. In 2018, they reached out to fellow art school graduate and bassist John Cha who had just returned from his mandatory two-year military service. wave to earth made their debut in August of the same year with the single ‘wave’, a dreamy track peppered with twinkling synths and lovesick lyrics.
The band went on to release two EPs in 2020, Wave 0.01 and Summer Flows 0.02, the latter featuring the tranquil, fan-favourite effort ‘Seasons’. Soundtracking over one million TikTok videos and racking up more than 350 million Spotify streams to date, ‘Seasons’ showcases wave to earth’s commitment to deeply personal music making which resonates so strongly with their listeners. This unwavering commitment to authenticity is underpinned by the band’s intent on maintaining complete control of their creative process, handling all aspects of recording, mixing and mastering, as well as the artistic direction of their visual exports.
Inching closer to their overriding goal to ‘become the new wave’ and expand their universe across the world, the band signed with the independent label Wavy Seoul (owned by fellow South Korean singer-songwriter, Colde) in 2021. Writing almost exclusively in English, and drawing major inspiration from American artists such as Clairo and Ryan Beatty, the band’s first full-length album, 0.1 flaws and all. was subsequently released in 2023. The hazy 14-track album proved to be a masterful display of their evolving artistry, featuring the standout single ‘bad’, which with its guitar-driven refrains, climbed to No.1 on Spotify’s Viral 50 - Global chart. The album’s success led to their first world tour, which saw the band bring their mesmerising live shows to a string of sold-out dates across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, with many of the venues being upgraded to accommodate the demand.
In September 2024, wave to earth released their second full-length album, play with earth! 0.03. The album debuted at No.5 on Spotify’s Global Top Debut Album chart, receiving widespread acclaim for its breezy vocals, pared-back instrumentation and timeless qualities, with track ‘Annie’ proving particularly popular with listeners. Following the release, wave to earth embarked on their 0.03 World Tour, for which they bolstered their line-up with keyboardist Jo Jung-geun and saxophonist Jeon-min, before continuing their streak of sold-out performances to audiences across the globe.
