About

LA’s ethereal art-rock outfit return to the UK in 2022

Collaborations with Goldensuns and Gang Of Four marked Warpaint’s first new music in years as the band announce a one-off UK date for May 2022.

Atmosphere is everything for Warpaint. Slow-building their live shows out of rolling walls of stripped-down dream pop, the band deal in space as well as sound – making even the biggest venues feel darkly intimate.

Formed in LA back in 2004, the original line-up saw sisters Jenny Lee Lindberg and Shannyn Sossamon join childhood friends Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman in playing ethereal California art-rock inspired by the likes of Cocteau Twins, Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Later albums would segue into krautrock, synthpop and hip-hop, but the band’s roots were firmly set when they released their confident and sprawling first EP, Exquisite Corpse, in December 2007.

Mixed and mastered by John Frusciante of Red Hot Chili Peppers (also Kokal’s boyfriend at the time), the EP put Warpaint on everyone’s radar, earned them a support slot on the XX’s European tour and got them signed to Rough Trade. With the band’s profile exploding, Sossamon left to focus on her acting career and Stella Mozgawa took her place behind the drum kit as Warpaint went into the studio to record their hugely anticipated debut album.

The Fool was released in October 2010 to major international acclaim and the band spent the next two years on the road – taking stages at Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, Coachella and the Hollywood Bowl. Spending their downtime jamming together, a more experimental sound started to emerge organically from the new line-up – with acoustic guitars, synths and drum machines starting to get more use as Warpaint worked on a self-titled second album that served as something of a reinvention.

Released in January 2014, Warpaint amplified the band’s sound into something even more ambitious. Lead single Love Is To Die was picked up by adverts and TV shows (Calvin Klein, True Blood), the record went double silver and Warpaint embarked on a huge three-leg world tour.

Staying on the road until the middle of 2015, the band took time out for solo projects and collaborations before reuniting again the following year for Warpaint’s third LP, Heads Up – an album that felt as urgent and essential as the band’s own fast rise.
