About

An explosion of love and treachery

Puccini’s Tosca is one of the world’s most popular of operas. A political thriller, it’s set in Rome in 1800 during the Napoleonic wars – with the story’s action feeling intense because it spans the period of a single day.

There are three main characters in Tosca: Rome’s star opera singer Floria Tosca, her lover Mario Cavaradossi and the corrupt police chief Baron Scarpia, who lusts after her. When Cavaradossi helps a political prisoner escape, Scarpia takes advantage of the situation to not only make Tosca reveal that prisoner’s whereabouts, but also to get her for himself – or else see her lover killed.

Award-winning opera producer Ellen Kent has been putting on a traditional staging of Tosca for many years that combines this heady mix of torture, treachery and true love. The Times described one of her past performances of Tosca at London’s Royal Albert Hall as “brilliantly sung”.

With two of the best roles for tenor and soprano singing a full score of musical motifs, Tosca is not to be missed. Opera fans delight in hearing the famous soprano aria Vissi D’Arte (I Lived For Art) sung by Tosca, the heartbreaking E Lucevan Le Stelle (The Stars Were Shining Brightly) sung by Cavaradossi as he awaits execution and the sacred hymn Te Deum (God, We Praise You), during which Scarpia – a truly blood-curdling villain – gloats with anticipation of his conquest.

In early 2021, Senbla announced the presentation of Opera International’s award-winning Ellen Kent production of Tosca across numerous UK cities from January through April 2022. In addition to a highly lauded chorus and full orchestra, the show will feature Iurie Gisca as Scarpia and international soloists Maria Tonina, Elena Dee and Alyona Kistenyova.* Audiences can also expect to see a stunning new set with towering marble pillars and fabulous costumes.
