About

A powerhouse vocalist, Tori Kelly worked hard to transition from TV talent shows and YouTube covers to become one of the most captivating singer songwriters rooted in pop, R&B and gospel influences.

Known for her soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics, Tori Kelly has earned herself an adoring fanbase for her authentic sound and spiritual depth. Born Victoria Loren Kelly in 1992 in Wildomar, California, she grew up in a musical household; her Puerto Rican father played bass, while her Irish-German mother was a singer. Aged ten, she took part in the reality TV show Star Search, before going on to America’s Most Talented Kids, and then in 2010, the ninth season of American Idol. Although she was prematurely eliminated from American Idol, the experience only spurred Kelly on further to carve out her own path. She learned how to play guitar, began writing her own music, and started to post performances and covers to her YouTube (including a viral acoustic cover of Frank Ocean's ‘Thinkin Bout You’ in 2012), which quickly amassed over 1,000,000 subscribers.

In 2013, Tori Kelly independently released her first EP, Handmade Songs by Tori Kelly. The effort caught the attention of Capitol Records who signed her soon after, giving her the platform and resources to bring her music to an even larger audience and affording her opportunities such as supporting Ed Sheeran at Madison Square Garden that same year. Kelly’s debut album Unbreakable Smile was produced by Max Martin and released in 2015, featuring hits like ‘Nobody Love’ and ‘It Should Have Been Us’. Exemplifying her vocal prowess and dismissal of traditional genre boundaries, the album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200. Off the back of it, she also received a nomination for Best New Artist at the 58th Grammy Awards, performing alongside James Bay, and becoming the first artist in history to perform a Christian pop song at the Grammys.

Tori Kelly made her voice acting debut in the animated film Sing in 2016, where she took on the role of a shy elephant. Flexing her acting and musical talents via this new medium introduced Kelly to a whole new audience, and coincided with her beginning to explore her faith more openly through her music. The culmination was a gospel-inspired second studio album in 2018, entitled Hiding Place, which was aptly produced by Kirk Franklin. The album won Tori Kelly her first Grammy Awards for Best Gospel Album and Best Gospel Performance/Song for ‘Never Alone’ at the 61st Grammy Awards.

Inspired by True Events, Kelly’s follow-up album arrived in 2019 as a deeply personal record with sincere lyrics that grapple with themes of family, heartbreak and vulnerability. She went on to release her fifth studio album tori in 2023, followed by TORI. in 2024, which also coincided with Kelly dipping her toe back into the world of TV and film, in becoming the first artist to debut an original song with ‘All I Want’ for the popular period drama, Bridgerton.
