About

Fast-rising UK rapper who took drill to the top of the charts

Tion Wayne has come a long way from his early days making YouTube videos from his bedroom in North London. Rising quickly up the ranks of the urban DIY scene, Wayne earned his place in the history books after getting the first drill song to chart at number one, and has now collaborated with some of the biggest names in grime, trap and hip-hop.

Wayne was born in Edmonton, Enfield, and started making music on social media as a teen – perfecting his own brand of catchy Afro-pop drill with hard-earned, deeply personal lyrics. When he hit 21 Wayne made his first mixtape, Wayne’s World, and the impact was big enough to be felt around the world. Just two years after his first music hit the underground, Wayne found himself supporting the likes of Rick Ross and Sarkodie on tours across Europe and the US.

Continuing to build what would later become a trilogy of mixtapes, Wayne’s World 2 was released in 2016. Adding collaborators like One Acen, Scorcher and Afro B. Wayne, the record spilled over into the EP, Transition, which came out later the same year. The sudden burst of urgent new music caused Wayne’s profile to explode overnight – and a string of sold-out live dates across the UK (including Glastonbury, Koko and Brixton Academy) helped him land two tracks in the top 10.

More chart success followed in 2019 when Wayne featured on NSG’s single, Options, which peaked at number seven – before Wayne’s World 3 completed his early trilogy with a move towards a bigger sound full of infectious hooks and summery beats. A second number seven hit was shared with Russ in 2020 with the club anthem Keisha & Becky, and Wayne kept himself in the charts over the next few months by rapping on KSI’s Houdini, and by bringing in Dutchavelli and Stormzy on his own track, I Dunno

In March 2021, Wayne joined Russ for the second time to release Body. Credited with becoming the first drill song in history to top the charts, the track cemented Wayne’s reputation as one of the most influential names on the scene. In September 2021, Wayne announced a huge London homecoming arena show to support the release of his new album, Green With Envy.
