Wailing riffs and high-octane rhythms from the Dublin sextet
For all the clobbering clout promised in their name – of which there is a lot – it's a gift for melodic ear-worms that cut through the fuzz and make THUMPER stick out of the crowd like a sore thumb.
The Dublin band started off as the solo project of Oisín Leahy Furlong in 2018, before he recruited five friends to bring his raucous songs to life on stage. Featuring Alan Dooley and Alex Harvey on guitars, Dav Campbell on bass and Stevie D'Arcy and Benedict Warner-Clayton sharing percussion, THUMPER released their debut EP Out Of Body Message in 2019. Including the tracks 'Down' and 'In My Room', the release foreshadowed the group's taste for curious, scratchy guitar intros and big band choruses, while 10 minute closer '3am & Restless' revealed they weren't afraid of exploring lengthy and heady songwriting.
As they rose up the ranks from hometown bars to bigger venues and festival stages across Europe, THUMPER released their debut album Delusions of Grandeur in 2022. Lead by the ridiculously catchy 'Fear of Art' and featuring tracks from the slow-burning 'Topher Grace' to the rocket speed 'Ad Nauseum', Louder Than War called their album a "raucous collection of crafted songs driven by a psychedelic wall of sound," while The Irish times noted that "Thumper have carved out a corner of Ireland’s burgeoning guitar rock scene by maintaining a strong sense of self."
Fans that caught THUMPER at festivals such as The Great Escape in 2022 would have witnessed a surprising cover to say the least. "I am unwritten," sang Oisín after a wailing guitar that paid homage to Natasha Bedingfield's 2004 pop classic. The band released the cover officially in 2023 alongside the explosive new track 'Circles'.
2024 saw Furlong release a solo dream-pop album under the moniker Anamoe Drive, while THUMPER announced that they would be playing four summer shows before knuckling down to work on their second full-length album.
