The War On Drugs announce Liverpool and London shows for summer 2024

Back in the 80s, it could sometimes seem like every car came with free copies of Born In The USA and Brothers In Arms in the glove compartment.

A modern updating of that policy would almost definitely see the entire back catalogue of Philadelphia's The War On Drugs pre-loaded into anything with a passing chance of hitting the open road. Drawing heavily from the masters – Springsteen to Petty, Dylan to Dire Straits – Adam Granduciel’s band makes music that is atmospheric, cinematic, engagingly familiar and refreshingly unique.

Singer songwriter Granduciel met guitarist Kurt Vile at a party in 2003 and the two were instant kindred spirits. They began writing together, naturally evolving over time into a fully fledged band. After extensive touring, they released their debut EP Barrel Of Batteries in 2007.

Their first full-length, Wagonwheel Blues, followed a year later, creating a buzz in the music press off the back of tracks such as the freewheeling, Dylan-esque ‘Arms Like Boulders’ and the ’90s Petty-isms of ‘Taking The Farm’.

With Vile’s solo career beginning to take flight, he left The War On Drugs, starting a chain reaction that left Granduciel as the sole remaining member. Granduciel regrouped with a new line-up for the 2010 mini-album Future Weather, with the acclaimed Slave Ambient coming a year after.

Granduciel and co. spent two years working on the follow-up to Slave Ambient but the time was clearly well spent. Released on Atlantic Records, the yearning, widescreen Lost In The Dream honed in on classic rock’s deviation into synth-laced work in the ’80s – like some windswept meeting place of Tunnel Of Love, Southern Accents and Oh Mercy.

Lost In The Dream wasn’t just the band’s best-reviewed studio album yet, it was also their most successful by a country mile, propelling them on to bigger audiences and venues than ever before.

The War On Drugs returned in 2017 with A Deeper Understanding and a clear sense of purpose, furthering the sonic explorations of Lost In The Dream and blowing its cinematic aspirations up to IMAX proportions, most notably on the breath-taking 11-minute opus Thinking Of A Place.

Inevitably, the band’s tireless touring schedule finally produced a live album, Live Drugs which arrived in 2020. A new album, I Don't Live Here Anymore, followed in 2021. Recorded over three years at seven studios, it was preceded by the gently Springsteen-esque single ‘Living Proof’ and the soaring Bob Dylan-entranced title track.

In 2024 The War On Drugs return to the UK for headline shows at Liverpool's Mountford Hall on 9 July and two nights at London's Royal Albert Hall on 11 & 12 July.

Amazing band --- Definitely my favorite band to emerge in the last 10 years. And a great venue, obviously!

Really disappointed with The War On Drugs gig . Was looking forward to it as I really like the band . They were brilliant but what spoilt it for me and it's nothing to do with the band or venue was the incessant talking during the songs from large sections of the crowd . I realise we weren't watching chamber music but I would actually like to hear the band not the inane chatter from people surrounding me . It must also really irritate the band especially during the slower numbers . Sadly this just seems to be the way some people act in gigs .

So as a very regular gig goer at a wide range of venues I would call myself fairly experienced (this was number 299 if you wanted the number). First off when I tried researching the venue I found very limited information online, it took me straight through to the O2 Academy Liverpools website for which I believe this is not, so I had to put in a little more effort surrounding where to park etc, we ended up parking a 7minute walk away at Paddington Village car park which was very secure. Not knowing where we were going we followed Google Maps but it was a very tricky venue to find there was no signage or sign posting as to where to go. We ended up having to ask a member of staff where to queue. When inside again the venue needed proper sign posting as to where to go, people were running all around us and no one knew which direction was the floor or balcony. That being said the venue itself was lovely, well presented. There were three of us in our party, two of us went to the front barrier and one on the balcony. Balcony views were reported as very good and the sound up there amazing. Obviously front barrier views were good and the sound equally good. One big issue for all was the heat, inside the venue there was very little if any air conditioning. The staff ended up opening emergency exit doors to let air in. Drinks were on the dear side and it was £15 for two bottles of cider. Bars got busy throughout the gig but that is always the case. All in all it was a lovely venue with a couple of issues which is why it has the four stars instead of five.

The War on Drugs gave an outstanding performance. The set list and the performance far exceeded any expectations had for this small venue with great sound and acoustics. only down side was the venue suffers from poor air circulation and was exceptionally hot. overall a great experience and look forward to see the WOD again in future. UNDER PRESSURE outstanding song of the night :-)
