About

Finnish chart-topping alt-rockers

Finnish quartet The Rasmus formed in Helsinki in 1995 while frontman Lauri Ylönen, bassist Eero Heinonen, guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi, and drummer Jarno Lahti were all still in school. Lahti left after only a year, replaced by Janne Heiskanen, and the band went on to release their funk-rock influenced debut Peep in 1996. By the following year, they’d already won an EMMA (the Finnish Grammys) for Best Newcomer.

The Rasmus’s second album followed that same year. Playboys saw the band’s following in their homeland grow steadily, but things took a significant leap forwards with 1998’s Hell Of A Tester. Abandoning the funk trappings of their early work, The Rasmus moved towards a darker, more melodic alt rock sound and won Best Single Of The Year from the Finnish music press for the song Liquid.

Heiskanen left the band shortly afterwards, replaced on drums by Aki Hakala. Their first album with Hakala, 2001’s Into, extended The Rasmus’s popularity beyond their native Finland and the band capitalised on this with 2003’s slick Dead Letters and the singles F-F-F-Falling and In The Shadows.

Over the rest of the ’00s, The Rasmus held tight to their position as Finland’s premier rock band as well as increasing their footprint across the rest of Europe and the UK. Hide From The Sun and Black Roses both topped the Finnish album charts and the band rounded out the decade with the Best Of 2001–2009 compilation.

In the wake of their 2012 self-titled album, The Rasmus were uncharacteristically quiet. It was only in 2016 that word emerged of a new album. Dark Matters arrived in 2017.

In 2021, The Rasmus announced that they'd been working on a new album, set for release in 2022. The first single, Bones, was released in May 2021 along with details of The Rasmus UK tour dates for October and November 2022. In 2024, the band announced that new music was on the way, set to be accompanied by a world tour in 2025.
