About The Pitmen Painters

Written by Lee Hall, author of Billy Elliot, The Pitmen Painters brings to life the story of the Ashington Group - miners from Northumberland who became celebrated artists.
In 1934, a group of miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class, and soon the pitmen began to paint. Their work became widely admired and collected; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine.
Winner of Best New Play at the 2008 Evening Standard Awards, The Pitmen Painters is a funny and deeply moving production which has delighted audiences during previous sold-out runs at the National Theatre, and on tour.

‘A glorious instant classic. Perfectly pitched and acted... funny and illuminating. ' Evening Standard

‘A play about the importance of not just feeding your stomach and your brain, but about feeding your soul. And it does just that.' Guardian

‘A beautiful work of art that everybody should see.' The Times

‘Inspired, witty, serious and humbling... feisty writing and astonishingly fine performances.' Daily Mail
