About The Phantom of the Opera

The West End production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mesmerising and iconic musical, The Phantom of the Opera, has now been showing for over 33 years. The timeless romantic and gothic tragedy has been entertaining audiences across the world since it first opened in 1986 in Her Majesty’s Theatre in London.

Set in Paris, the captivating tale tells the story of the Phantom and his musical protégé Christine.  With his face hidden by the famous Phantom of the Opera mask, this frightening enigma hides beneath the Paris Opera House, haunting the cast.  A disfigured musical genius, he is both shamed and feared for his appearance and operates in a shadowy and mysterious existence. He becomes enchanted by a beautiful young chorus singer and dancer, Christine Daae, who performs in the opera house each night. He takes her on as his student and teaches her to sing, writing a new opera piece especially for her, while falling deeply in love. However, he is competing for her affections with the handsome Raoul, and the story becomes a haunting and romantic epic with tragedy, jealousy and deep obsessive love at its core. The on-stage drama is magically complemented by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mesmerising musical score, along with jaw-dropping scenery and breath-taking special effects.

The Phantom of the Opera is one of London’s best West End theatre shows and is the second longest running show after Les Misérables. The tragic love story continues to delight and enchant audiences, and has won over 70 major theatre awards, including three Olivier awards, an Olivier audience award, and seven Tony awards amongst many others.
