About

Brooding Brooklyn quintet who merge ornate, dynamic indie rock with opaque tales of suburban ennui

The National that currently exists – with its anthemic, orchestral sweep and darkly majestic soundscapes – is a very different beast to the one that first came out of Brooklyn in the last gasp of the ’90s.

The first traces of the band can be traced back to Cincinnati, where frontman Matt Berninger and bassist Scott Devendorf played together in local punk band Nancy. A move to New York saw the duo link up with Scott’s brother Bryan (drums) and fellow Ohioan Aaron Dessner (guitar).

On their 2001 self-titled debut, The National showed traces of the imposing, urbane, late night angst that would become their calling card, but it was pushed further down in the mix by a sombre alt-country and Americana twist not dissimilar from the likes of the Tindersticks. The album was released on Brassland, a label run by Dessner’s identical twin brother Bryce. Shortly after, he joined the band as their second guitarist.

Two years later, the quintet returned with Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers, an album that introduced Padma Newsome, a multi-instrumentalist who would become an almost permanent auxiliary member of the band.

A small following was building, one that grew exponentially with the 2005 release of Alligator, the band’s first for the revered UK label Beggars Banquet. The country flourishes were gone and in their place were dynamic, anthemic soundscapes ebbing and flowing beneath Berninger’s brooding baritone and dark-night-of-the-soul musings.

The band’s most significant breakthrough came with 2007’s Boxer, featuring the band’s strongest set of songs yet. Fake Empire, the album’s spine-tingling rolling stone of an opening track, would go on to be used in a campaign video for Barack Obama.

With a bigger audience waiting, The National showed no sign of abating. They released the critically acclaimed High Violet in 2010, demonstrating their far-reaching influence with a list of collaborators that included Sufjan Stevens and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. The album would become their highest-charting so far in both the US and the UK.

The band returned in 2012 with Trouble Will Find Me, an album that was sonically similar to its predecessor but more subdued and morose, Berninger cast as the lost soul at closing time, searching for answers at the bottom of a cut-glass tumbler of scotch.

The National were quiet for a period while the members of the band indulged in various extra-curricular activities (EL VY, LNZNDRF, Pfarmers, etc.). They reconvened in Aaron Dessner’s studio in an 18th century barn to record their seventh album. Released in 2017, Sleep Well Beast became the band’s first UK No.1 album.

Berninger teamed up with director Mike Mills to collaborate on an undefined project that would eventually yield a short film starring Alicia Vikander and a new album from The National. I Am Easy To Find featured a cast of supporting vocalists, including Sharon Van Etten, Gail Ann Dorsey, Eve Owen, Lisa Hannigan and Kate Stables (This Is The Kit).

Following the release of I Am Easy To Find, Aaron Dessner teamed up with Taylor Swift to co-produce and co-write her two 2020 records Folklore and Evermore, while Berninger released his first solo album Serpentine Prison that same year.

Mysterious masks arrived on the doorsteps of fanclub members in early 2023, just prior to the band announcing their ninth studio album First Two Pages Of Frankenstein.

In 2023, The National announced a return to UK stages for summer 2024.

  • Great Gig once we found the Way In.

by Smudger on 14/07/2024Crystal Palace Park - LondonRating: 3 out of 5

Despite the lousy weather we really enjoyed The National who played for around 2 hours & a different set to their one at Glastonbury. The entrance staff helped us with a QR code for my pay as you go phone. Our only criticism is that there were absolutely no signs on the North side of the park to indicate the Way In. As it was we were not the only people who made the wrong choice & trudged clockwise which was the long route & exhausted my wife who has limited mobility. We'd be grateful if Ticketmaster would ask event organisers to post information around the perimeter of the park in future. Thank you.

  • Wonderful Gig

by Steg on 12/07/2024Edinburgh Castle Esplanade - EdinburghRating: 5 out of 5

I'd never been to Edinburgh Castle for a gig before, I wasn't sure what to expect. With The National, I don't think the venue matters, I've seen them previously in the O2, and the hydro in Glasgow, both absolutely wonderful shows, and this one certainly didn't disappoint. A mixed blend of older and newer songs, with loads of favourites in there too, mine were, "About Today", "Mr. November", "Sorrow", "Walking With Spiders", and "Fake Empire". At well over 2 hours, I wasn't bored or disappointed for one minute. I'd travelled 80 miles for this gig, and I'd do it again in an instant. Loved it.

  • Best band in the world at a fabulous venue

by Dave on 09/07/2024Castlefield Bowl - ManchesterRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely outstanding from start to finish. There is no better live band touring today and with an extraordinary back catalogue and a venue that never fails, it was always going to be a good night. It turned out to be a great one

  • Fantastic live

by Hoggy on 06/07/2024Crystal Palace Park - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

Great band, great sound. Totally engaging. The venue situated the bars at the total opposite end of the stage meaning you missed / walked / queued for ages to get a drink.

  • What an amazing gig - despite the rain !

by Stephen on 06/07/2024Crystal Palace Park - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

The National were absolutely brilliant. The weather was shocking but the band engaged with the crowd with Matt taking his usual strolls through the audience and giving one fan his jacket because they were cold. The song selection was excellent - they played 80% of their big hits plus some real treats with a few less well know songs. I took my 15 year old son who loves the national (along with me) and it was a great afternoon/evening for us both and a great bonding experience. Thank you !

  • Great concert but event signage and organisation very poor

by The National on 06/07/2024Crystal Palace Park - LondonRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoyed all the Bands especially the National but Venue organisation left a lot to be desired. Had a VIP ticket, no prominent signage to show where to go to get in, got sent away from main entrance to go back and get a wristband, was then asked for ID ( didn't have any), then caught behind someone where the Stewards seemed unsure whether he could take certain items into the show. Enquired at help point about exits as wanted to get to the Bus station at top of the hill, they said yes you can use alternative exit and showed it on the map, there was even an illuminated sign showing direction to Coaches and Buses, however as I headed that way during the encore another Steward prevented exit and stated it was only for staff. So back down to main exit and then directed away from going up the hill and back towards train station! Had to argue with another Steward to exit in the direction I wanted to go despite access being available via barriers. Really felt a little disorganised

  • Awesome band!! Awful venue...

by Jules on 06/07/2024Crystal Palace Park - LondonRating: 4 out of 5

I absolutely love The National and, as always, they knocked out of the (Crystal Palace) Park! Unfortunately, the roads accessing the park had all been closed off (why?), resulting in a 25 minute walk across the park - both ways... Whilst the VIP village had a great vibe (and the weather is well, just the weather), it should been situated up on the main field, enabling actual sight of the band/stage. All in all, I won't be going another gig at this venue... Almost forgot - great support acts too!

  • Marvellous performance

Spectaculars performance, as always. Exceptional band! Wasn't keen on the Crystal Palace park venue though.
