  • A mixed bag

by Staphman on 12/05/2025Aviva Studios - The Hall - ManchesterRating: 3 out of 5

Basically, this gig was one of two halves, literally. Thorsten came on by himself initially and played what I think was Sequent C from Phaedra, blowing into some kind of wind instrument. All three then played for about an hour. What they were playing I don't know as it was so distorted and messy sounding that it became tiresome. Hoshiko played her violin for short periods but it wasn't possible to hear what she played as it was drowned out by the general dirge, which included a repetitive deeply bass note. Although I last saw TD about 40+ years ago, i was looking forward to the end as it was dreadfully dull. After about an hour, Thorsten said that there would be a break for 30 minutes, then 'we will come back for about 60 - 75 minutes, then we will see you at the merch'. A guy who was sitting next to me said that he wasn't impressed, and didn't return. We grabbed a quick bite to eat and returned. What a difference! The sound was much brighter, and Hoshiko was much more obvious. They were dynamic and the lighting was an improvement. Much of what they played was quite basic and I didn't recognise anything they played, but it was catchy and the audience responded with much clapping and head bobbing. At the end they got a rapturous send off and said they'd be back. They didn't appear at the merchandise stand but that's probably because they had overrun substantially. A few members of the audience, which was overwhelmingly middle-aged to older men, hung around hoping to get their merch signed, before being asked to 'start making your way downstairs'. I think the band knew that the first 60 minutes had been poor, and extended their set. During the break they may have sorted out the issue. Whatever, they managed to turn disaster into triumph.

  • Ethereal Electronica at Birmingham Town Hall

by Steve on 11/05/2025Town Hall Birmingham - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

Thorsten, Hoshiko and Paul delivered an absolutely wonderful performance. It was captivating, euphoric, and a privilege to be able to embrace a different realm of reality (if just for a little while). I love both old and new TD works, and for me, the quality has never wavered from electronica par excellence. I always find it slightly confusing that the demographic tends to be with the long time fans and followers only for the most part, yet they produce innovative and pioneering electronic music that rivals most of today's current artists in my view! It was great to hear Thorsten confirm that it's too long between their UK shows and that they intend to come back next year. I'll definitely be in attendance! Recommended to all!!

  • Not theTangs I know

by TheResonator on 11/05/2025Aviva Studios - The Hall - ManchesterRating: 2 out of 5

Aviva studios Manchester don't like the venue soulless minimalist interior seating to close no leg room, as for the gig I know Phaedra is only a fourty minute album a thing you would not choose to present as a whole show it wouldn't have happened with the old tangs line up ,to start bang 7:30 and finish before 8:30: is not good value thir were a lot of disappointed people around me

  • Old favourite

by RAW on 10/05/2025Town Hall Birmingham - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

Great band which the line up has changed a lot since 1982 when first seen, old favourites played and seriously impressed with recent music which is more house come trap come acid sound, but then gentle and beautiful layered sounds created by the band. Look forward to next tour

  • Sound & Light; Past & Present

by Stephen on 14/10/2024Barbican Centre - LondonRating: 4 out of 5

Returning for one night only, Tangerine Dream brought a vibrant show of sound and light to the Barbican in London. A reworking of Edgar Froese's Phaedra was followed by a selection of music from the creation of TD in 1967 to the present day. A blend of nostalgia and contemporary sound and pace created a memorable, if not a little long without a break, evening to remember fondly.
