A mixed bag

Thorsten came on by himself initially and played what I think was Sequent C from Phaedra, blowing into some kind of wind instrument. All three then played for about an hour. What they were playing I don't know as it was so distorted and messy sounding that it became tiresome. Hoshiko played her violin for short periods but it wasn't possible to hear what she played as it was drowned out by the general dirge, which included a repetitive deeply bass note. Although I last saw TD about 40+ years ago, i was looking forward to the end as it was dreadfully dull. After about an hour, Thorsten said that there would be a break for 30 minutes, then 'we will come back for about 60 - 75 minutes, then we will see you at the merch'. A guy who was sitting next to me said that he wasn't impressed, and didn't return. We grabbed a quick bite to eat and returned. What a difference! The sound was much brighter, and Hoshiko was much more obvious. They were dynamic and the lighting was an improvement. Much of what they played was quite basic and I didn't recognise anything they played, but it was catchy and the audience responded with much clapping and head bobbing. At the end they got a rapturous send off and said they'd be back. They didn't appear at the merchandise stand but that's probably because they had overrun substantially. A few members of the audience, which was overwhelmingly middle-aged to older men, hung around hoping to get their merch signed, before being asked to 'start making your way downstairs'. I think the band knew that the first 60 minutes had been poor, and extended their set. During the break they may have sorted out the issue. Whatever, they managed to turn disaster into triumph.
