About

Celebrating their debut album with a UK tour

Comprising lead vocalist Alex Rice, guitarists Robb Knaggs and Henry Young, bassist Oli Dewdney, keyboardist Ben Mac and drummer Al Greenwood, London-based collective Sports Team met while studying at the UK's prestigious University of Cambridge. Drawn together by a shared love of '90s rock and a desire to shake up their stale local scene, the six-piece began to develop their energetic live show with a shared focus across music and rebellious performance.

Quickly making a name for themselves with their vibrant live shows, Sports Team signed to Nice Swan Records in 2018 for the release of the five-track EP, Winter Nets. Preceded by the release of singles Stanton and Beverly Rose, the EP immediately cemented Sports Team's playful sound, brimming with social and political commentary yet underpinned by a cathartic, carefree attitude.

Subsequent single releases such as Margate and M5 – both odes to the peculiarities of British life – received traction thanks to an ever-growing vocal fanbase and support from national press. In August 2018, Sports Team hosted their inaugural Margate bus trip to celebrate the release of the namesake single, a riotous journey they would repeat a year later.

M5 would go on to appear on Sports Team's second EP, 2019's Keep Walking!, which also featured singles Kutcher, Get Along and Kasper. Together, the success of the EPs would see the band sell out the likes of London's 1,000-capacity Scala and appear at various festivals across the summer, including a triumphant set at Reading and Leeds Festival in August 2019.

Sports Team released their much anticipated debut album Deep Down Happy in June 2020 through Big Desert/Island Records, launching an unexpected but well-deserved chart battle against international pop icon Lady Gaga. Taking to Twitter to rope in support from friends and fans – including Scottish chart-topper Lewis Capaldi – Sports Team declared the race to the top of the charts their "Blur vs Oasis" moment, ultimately finishing at No.2 on the Official UK Album Chart behind Gaga's Chromatica.

"Took it closer than we had any right to," they celebrated on Twitter. "Will be paying back the IOUs well into our forties but... what a ride. Love you all."

In June 2020, Sports Team announced a 2021 run of headline dates to celebrate the success of their Deep Down Happy debut.

Following a sold-out show at London’s Brixton Academy in 2021, Sports Team announced a huge run of live dates for 2022 to support the release their album Gulp!. News of a new third album (set for release in February 2025) brought with it another nationwide UK tour, kicking off in Manchester on 14 November 2024 and culminating in a show at London’s O2 Forum on 24 November.
