About
Pioneering synth-pop duo beloved for their worldwide hit and new wave anthem Tainted Love
Formed in 1980, the two-piece of Marc Almond and Dave Ball, better known as Soft Cell, scored a huge international hit in 1981 with their single Tainted Love, a reworking of a Gloria Jones' song originally recorded in 1964. After they performed it on BBC's Top Of The Pops, the song reached No.1 on the UK singles chart and became the No.2 best-selling single of the year.
Soft Cell's platinum-selling debut album, 1981's Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, built on that success, as did the follow-up – a six-track mini album called Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing, which arrived in 1982 and contained remixes of older music along with the new hit single What!
Their prophetically titled third album The Art Of Falling Apart came out in 1982. Prior to the release of 1984's This Last Night In Sodom, Soft Cell split up and spent the next 17 years concentrating on their solo careers before reuniting in 2001 for a series of live dates and then releasing their fourth album 2002's Cruelty Without Beauty. Soft Cell unveiled The Bedsit Tapes, a collection of their most raw and experimental demos, in 2005.
In 2018, Almond and Ball released two new tracks, Northern Lights and Guilty (Cos I Say You Are), before reuniting again for a special one-off show at London's O2 arena entitled Say Hello, Wave Goodbye.
Soft Cell revealed on Facebook in March 2021 that they wrote 20 brand new songs and had returned to the studio. In July, the pair announced their fifth studio album *Happiness Not Included would be released in spring 2022 and also confirmed details for a four-city, five-date UK tour in November 2021.
