About

This summer sees the opening of a brand new pop-up roller skate rink in the heart of London’s developing King’s Cross. Skate King's Cross launches in July and sees a return of roller skating to the area, which hosted legendary roller disco nights in the recent past.  Open for eight weeks only and designed by up and coming architecture studio Feix and Merlin, this exciting concept will offer a truly unique experience that combines roller skating, top name DJs and fantastic food and drink provided by Disco Bistro.

Skate King's Cross will be located in the Western Handyside Canopy, a covered space next to the stunning Granary Building, home to the iconic Central Saint Martins School of Arts and Design. The roller rink, will hold up to 100 skaters per session, while an adjacent bar and viewing area will be able to accommodate an additional 200 onlookers, diners and drinkers.

The beautifully designed rink celebrates the recent history of the area, where the legendary Canvas nightclub used to host a roller disco every Thursday.

The rink will be open six days a week and will cater for all ages. Roller disco nights will be hosted by some of the most exciting DJs and nights while families and children will be able to visit the rink during the day for special sessions.

Speaking about his design, Tarek Merlin of Feix and Merlin says:

“We have really been able to have fun with this project and I think this comes through in the final design. We’ve used raw, heavy materials, in keeping with the industrial heritage of the area, but we’ve also used gold chainmail and custom light installations to reference the recent past, when King’s Cross was a mecca for clubbers, ravers and yes, even skaters”

Skaters will roll around the rink to a lofty, disco soundtrack provided by the likes of Trevor Jackson, Damon Martin (Disco Bloodbath) and Hannah Holland, with special DJ sessions on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Food will be provided by punk foodies and pop-up masters Disco Bistro who will offer a selection of their signature diner food inspired delicacies. Guest chefs will be regularly invited, for more culinary surprises.
