About

Scottish art rockers breaking boundaries for more than 40 years

Simple Minds are one of the UK’s most successful bands, having achieved five No.1 albums and eight Top 10 singles at home, as well as landing numerous chart-topping positions around the world. In addition to selling over 60 million albums, they’ve packed the world’s biggest venues and played momentous shows including the American leg of Live Aid in 1985 and the Nelson Mandela tribute concert in 1988.

Formed in Glasgow in 1977 by vocalist Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill, Simple Minds have experienced a remarkable journey since releasing their debut album Life In A Day in early 1979, with their second album Real To Real Cacophony following just seven months later.

Constantly evolving and experimenting with their sound, Simple Minds recorded six studio albums in the 80s. Their 1981 double LP, Sons And Fascination and Sister Feelings Call, expanded their audience internationally thanks to Love Song, an ode to the close bond between Europe and America, which was also their first single to enter the UK Top 50.

But Simple Minds’ sixth, more rock-oriented record, 1984’s Sparkle In The Rain, really propelled them into the limelight. Peaking at No.1 on the UK albums chart, it featured the singles Up On The Catwalk, Speed Your Love To Me and Waterfront and opened doors to sharing stages with contemporaries such as U2. Later that year, Simple Minds broke the US market with the massive single Don’t You (Forget About Me) taken from the John Hughes movie The Breakfast Club.

Simple Minds ended the '80s as a world famous act, known for their stirring choruses and atmospheric sound and entered the 90s as one of the most in-demand live bands around. Their 1991 record Real Life hit No.2 and spawned four Top 40 singles in the UK. However, as the years passed, line-up changes took their toll and Simple Minds took a couple of short-lived hiatuses.

Creatively, the juices started flowing again in the 00s. On 2001’s Neon Lights, Simple Minds covered songs by some of their musical heroes, including David Bowie, Kraftwerk and Roxy Music, while the albums Black & White 050505 in 2005 and Graffiti Soul in 2008 both offered an homage to Nelson Mandela. Simple Minds also undertook several European and world tours, coinciding with the 2012 releases of their 5x5 Live album and Celebrate: The Greatest Hits+ compilation.

Re-invigorated and resurgent, by the time 2014’s Big Music album came out, Simple Minds were once again firing on all cylinders.

In 2016, Simple Minds released their first acoustic collection. Called simply Acoustic, it continued the band’s artistic experimentation with stripped down and re-imagined tracks spanning their eclectic career. That spring they took home an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection.

During the next two years, Simple Minds played over 150 shows around the world, including their biggest ever American tour, a 31-date trek that took them coast to coast.

Walk Between Worlds, released in late 2018, hit the UK charts at No.4, representing their highest position in 23 years.

In 2019, Simple Minds marked their 40th anniversary with the release of a career-spanning compilation, 40: The Best Of 1979-2019. In addition to early fan favourites and their era-defining hits, the collection also contained the new track For One Night Only, a cover of King Creosote’s euphoric celebration of weekend revelry.

2022 saw the release of more new music with Direction Of The Heart charting at No.4 in the UK just as the band began making plans for their biggest tour since 1985. Simple Minds' Global Tour will arrive in the UK in spring 2024, marking one of the most important chapters in the band's history.

Still very polished after all these years.

    by Nigel G on 25/06/2024

This was a really good event, great atmosphere and brilliant music from one of the best bands of the 80s. The set list was a great choice for us old timers wanting to revisit our youth. Still thumping out the tracks to get the crowd going. Jim and Charlie were as tight and cool as ever and the girls were amazing both vocally and on tempo. "Book of brilliant things" was a real triumph. Would love to see them come to the Wyldes again. We love you Jim, there's plenty more miles in the tank :) I must give the Wyldes a mention too. This was our first visit since moving to Cornwall. We had heard many good things about the venue and it really did live up to recommendation. The access, parking and exit were managed brilliantly. The food and drink on offer were plentiful and fairly priced for a captive audience. The staff were polite and friendly. Fair play. It was an all round great experience. I felt that Simple minds, never got the credit they deserved but this is a band with an amazing back catalogue who still knock it out of the park. Anthem after anthem. If they ever come to your town, you should make an effort to see them, you won't be disappointed. Hey, hey, hey, haay. Loved it.

    Simple Minds

    by Lisa M on 24/06/2024

Simple minds totally rocked the wydles.Very atmospheric.Del Amirri were also great.Enjoyed Coach party too.The venue was lovely and it felt very intimate.Street food vendors also very good. The only disappointment of the evening was the shuttle bus to and from the venue.Waited over an hour to get to the venue and nearly an hour and a half for our return journey back to Bude.Entry via shuttle bus to venue could of been organised so that there was a separate entrance to the venue and shuttle buses could of been run more frequently than hourly.

Awesome show, excellent venue. Really chilled atmosphere, lovely to sit under trees in the hot weather, no huge queues at the bar, staff very helpful and friendly. And Simple Minds were fantastic. Definitely go again.

    Gig and shuttle bus

    by Denzow23 on 24/06/2024

Well, my husband and I booked the shuttle bus return at £20 each. What a big mistake that was a complete and utter shambles. There was only two 72 seater buses/coaches. We had to wait 1hr 30min for them to arrive. Concequently we missed one of the support bands we wanted to listen to. When we finally arrived at the venue we were quickly through the security checks. The bus issue needs to be sorted out for next year.

Del Amitri Trump Simple Minds IMHO

    by Geoff on 23/06/2024

I will admit to be hopelessly biased, but for me Del Amitri were the best act at The Wyldes this Saturday. On a perfect summer's day, we were treated to decent sets from the 3 acts before the main stage saw some action, the pick of which was the Welsh band CVC (some great bass playing here). I'd gone to the Wyldes specifically to see Del Amitri - I've been a big fan since the late 80's and the news that Justin Curry had developed Parkinson's Disease has made me more determined to catch the band live. Despite suffering from a heavy cold, Curry's performance was a treat as the Dels worked their way through some of their all time greats, starting with Last to Know and finishing with Nothing Ever Happens, with full crowd participation. For me, it was an emotional experience, watching the band and Justin work their way through their set, wondering if I'll ever get the chance to see them live again. Simple Minds headlined and their set was a real stadium band experience. They ran through a good selection of their biggest hits and fan favourites, pushing the crowd all the way. However, I was there to see Del Amitri and they didn't disappoint. A word in support of the Wyldes as a venue - this is a very attractive place to watch live music, especially when the weather plays along, with a wonderful vibe through. Excellent facilities and decent, reasonably priced food too. The only issue was that it took a long time to get our camper van into the site, because there was some confusion over ticketing. A clearer description on options would have helped - stewards had issues with people not knowing that they had to buy a pitch ticket, as well as live-in camping tickets, which led to a long queue for vans and traffic tailbacks in the lanes leading to the site.

    What an amazing night

    by Poppsy jones on 23/06/2024

The layout of the park was fantastic. The staff were super friendly and knowledgeable. The catering was full of choices catering for all dietary requirements. Never had to queue at the bar very efficient service. The location of having the band in the woods was breathtaking. The open fire was a delightful experience and kept us cosy. Then of course the bands…. I danced and danced all night. Just WOW 🤩 🤩🤩🤩🤩
