About
Armed with a DIY ethos and punk sensibilities, 21-year-old Seb Lowe has been dubbed the voice of his generation for his raw and unfiltered take on protest music.
An initially reluctant rising star, Seb Lowe found fame on TikTok in 2021 as a solo artist with a knack for translating his sharp social commentary into satirical songwriting and playful visuals. Earning comparisons to Billy Bragg and Frank Turner, Lowe’s politically charged lyrics are delivered with powerful vocals and echo the disillusionment of many of his Gen Z peers.
Hailing from Oldham, Greater Manchester, Lowe grew up doing musical theatre and singing, before learning to play the guitar aged 14. Fast forward to lockdown, Seb Lowe began to upload his own tracks to TikTok where his timely takes on British politics, inequality and societal frustrations resonated with users. Citing inspiration from Eminem, Lowe’s appreciation of well-placed comic relief shines through, as his songwriting often balances urgent calls to arms with moments of wit and humour. For instance, his single ‘Terms and Conditions’ (2022) features punchy observations on the north-south divide, but also nods to his musical theatre days as he switches personas and accents whilst strumming earnestly.
As Seb Lowe’s audience began to grow, so did the appetite for more formal releases and eventually some live shows too. Lowe’s debut EP, Half-decent arrived in 2021, featuring TikTok favourites such as ‘Kill him (he’s a Socialist)’ and ‘iPhone’. This spurred Lowe to flesh out his songs with a full band, adding electric guitars, drums, bass, and even violin, to give his acoustic indie-punk a bigger, more dynamic sound – something that proved pivotal in translating his music to the live setting.
As a band, Seb Lowe quickly made waves in the UK indie and punk scenes, performing at venues up and down the country with Kate Couriel on violin, Ben Etches on guitar, and Joel Goodwin on drums. Lowe’s five-track EP, The Other Half soon followed in 2022, coinciding with Lowe announcing that he and the band would be playing Glastonbury the following summer. Featuring tracks like ‘Upper Class’ and ‘There She Stood’ (the latter marking a brief departure from Lowe’s political agenda, instead tackling matters of the heart), the EP was extremely well-received by critics.
Today, Seb Lowe has amassed an online audience of more than 400k, as well as around 10 million views. Now signed to Manchester’s LAB Records, his TikTok presence is still as important as ever in preserving his accessible approach to political music, as well as giving viewers a taste of what to expect at one of his frenetic and captivating live shows.
