Acclaimed indie rock singer-songwriter
The word “meteoric” suffers from frequent misuse. Either it’s mistakenly applied to bands who struggled for a decade or it’s wielded like a slur, as if near-immediate recognition is worth less than years of playing to five people in rural pubs.
Sam Fender’s rise can only be called meteoric and with no negative connotations. His musical grounding is in his DNA, his talent so blatant that it couldn’t go unnoticed. Born in North Shields in 1996, Fender was spotted as a teenager by Ben Howard’s manager and snapped up.
His 2017 debut single Play God demonstrated a gifted songwriter with more than introspection and young love on his mind and a grounding in the greats, from Bruce Springsteen to Jeff Buckley. Two more well-received singles and Fender was riding a wave of hype all the way to a coveted spot on the BBC’s Sound Of 2018 list (alongside Billie Eilish and Lewis Capaldi) and a deal with Polydor.
Sam Fender’s debut EP Dead Boys landed in 2018, gaining gushing reviews for its title track, which addressed suicide in young men. The following year, he won the Critics’ Choice Award at the BRITs without even having released an album yet.
Said album finally arrived later in 2019 in the shape of Hypersonic Missile. Again, reviews were ecstatic and Fender was invited to open for Neil Young and Bob Dylan at Hyde Park as well as a personal invitation from Elton John to play his AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Party. Elton John joined Fender onstage at the party for a rendition of Fender’s song Will We Talk? Sam Fender’s second album, Seventeen Going Under, followed in 2021.
In 2022, Sam Fender solidified himself as one of the most celebrated and successful British artists of his generation, pulling a huge crowd on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury ahead of his own 45,000 sell-out show at London’s Finsbury Park. He also picked up a slew of BRIT, NME, and Ivor Novello Awards, and a first nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize for his second album.
That same year, Sam Fender announced his first stadium headline show at Newcastle's St. James' Park in the summer of 2023, following in the footsteps of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan, and becomes the first Geordie musician to headline the stadium.
Fender announced his People Watching tour for December 2024. The seven-date run starts in Dublin at the 3Arena and ends at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, also stopping at Leeds, Manchester, London, Birmingham and Glasgow – with £1 from every ticket sold for the UK dates to be donated to the Music Venue Trust in support of grassroots venues.

I've seen him 3 times now, twice in Dublin and once in Belsonic and he didn't disappoint everytime! I wish i could go to his Belfast show but I can't :( One of my favourite people in the world, puts on a brilliant show especially with hypersonic missiles and 17 going under. Unreal 10/10 🤩
Same Fender has such great songs and songs that fans know every word to. He delivered a really great performance, but when combined with amazing lighting and stage effects, and a crowd in fine singing voice, that was amplified to perfection around the walls of the Manchester Co-op Live. Well, surely it was the best night of the tour. So so good.

Absolutely loved the gig. Venue also superb BUT Ticketmaster are scammers. Charged us for 3 seats when we only wanted 2 but wouldn't let us purchase 2 because they know nobody wants a single seat. Disgusting! As it happens, loads of seats not filled.
Travelled over the M62 in a storm to get there but we'll worth the risk. The Co-op live venue was well staffed and security was quite tight due to being in Manchester with recent events. My ticket was classed as restricted view but was actually a great seat and good clear sight of stage ? Sam never fails to impress me belting out hit after hit. Totally enjoyed the concert and venue but didn't like the rip off prices charged for refreshments. Whish I had tickets for Newcastle next year.
Although I have seen Sam perform multiple times before, my high expectations were not disappointed! His stage presence and personality particularly shone through with his crowd interactions, and he arranged the various styles within his set perfectly. The lighting and effects were impressive and added to the truly memorable experience. The whole band was incredible, but Brooke Bentham deserves a particular mention. Her vocals were flawlessly blended and added a new depth and exciting feel to the pieces and to the overall show. Fender has undying, serious talent - but it is his humble passion and down-to-earth nature in his performance that encapsulates his unique genius that cannot be replicated. (Logistics advice for attending the venue: go to the upper water fountains to avoid the large crowds at the end of the concert! Because everyone came downstairs at once to leave, the queues were over 30 minutes, but it was virtually empty upstairs.)
Sam fender what a legend. Stunning vocals. Stunning performance, stunning crowd, staff at the venue was brilliant. Security was brilliant. Venue was amazing aswell giving experience no matter where you sit you've a brilliant view.
Great night of music, the set was fantastic and camaraderie between the band was really nice to see. He's so down to earth and playful! I'll definitely be going to see them again!
